Social and Emotional Learning at Campbell Hall

BY JULIAN BULL

On September 12, the first Parents’ Association meeting of the year will feature a panel and audience discussion of the social and emotional issues our students are facing at the different grade levels. Campbell Hall has always seen itself as educating hearts as well as minds, and these days Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is a hot topic everywhere. Come hear our local experts and contribute to the discussion!
Campbell Hall prides itself on creating a safe and healthy community, but that doesn’t mean that the challenges children face around the world don’t show up here too. What’s different is our radically proactive approach, emphasizing from the first day of kindergarten that as spiritual beings, children have a full breadth of tools and support they need to address all the challenges they may face. There are many particular SEL programs for students K-12 at CH, but all follow from the premise that, as children of God, all of us have to the right to lead, and the capacity for leading, “decent, loving, and responsible” lives. Our work as teachers and parents is 1) to deepen that basic understanding in ourselves, each in our own way, and 2) to connect the trials and tribulations of the day to the insights that will help our students grow spiritually as well as intellectually.

You will hear me say often that our time is one of a spiritual crisis demanding a spiritual solution. The only identity we all share beyond all our political, socioeconomic, ethnic, and religious differences is that we emerge from the same Ground of being, and from that are called to love one another and seek out the truth. There is no unity or even possibility of unity apart from those spiritual commitments. Those commitments presuppose no prior belief, just an understanding that the best answer to any problem will emerge if we persevere intelligently and in good faith as a community of inquiry. Our Parents’ Association meetings are a great place to experience that community firsthand, and so I hope you will join us.
