Endowment

Campbell Hall is delighted to announce the successful completion of the Legacy for Good Endowment Campaign! Launched in 2012 with a goal of growing the school’s endowment to $25 million, Legacy for Good has played a critical role in increasing our financial sustainability and resiliency. We are grateful to the over 800 individuals and families participating in the Legacy for Good for their leadership support. As of June 2021, the market value of the school’s endowment was $27 million.

An endowment is a permanent fund in which the principal is strategically invested and protected in perpetuity. A portion of the annual investment income from Campbell Hall’s endowment is spent each year as part of the school’s operating budget, with the remainder being reinvested in order to achieve further growth. Although the Legacy for Good campaign has concluded, we will continue to build the school’s endowment.

A strong endowment is the best way to ensure that future generations benefit from Campbell Hall’s extraordinary teachers, outstanding programs, and diverse community.

  • Alumni Legacy Scholarship Fund

    Provides financial aid to children of alumni whose families might not otherwise be able to afford a Campbell Hall education.

  • Argyll Endowed Scholarship Fund

    Established in honor of Argyll Academy in support of scholarship funds for female students.

  • The Rev. Canon Julian P. Bull Endowed Scholarship Fund

    Established to honor The Rev. Canon Julian P. Bull and to further student-led environment-related projects.

  • CH Black Alumni Collective Endowment

    Established in 2019 to ensure that Black students are able to access the full array of Campbell Hall academic, experiential, milestone, and school-year experiences, while also continuing the connection among Black alumni to their alma mater.

  • CH Scholars Endowment

    Established in support of the Campbell Scholars Program which extends the school's core mission to economically-disadvantaged high-achieving students enrolled in Title 1 schools who aspire to be the first in their family to graduate from a four-year college. 

  • The Rev. Canon Thomas G. Clarke Endowed Scholarship Fund

    Established by the Campbell Hall Alumni Association in honor of former Head of School, The Rev. Canon Thomas G. Clarke '59, to recognize students who exemplify good character, commit to school service, and have the potential for academic achievement.

  • The Class of 2020 Endowment

    Established to honor the Class of 2020 and provide financial aid to students, a mission-critical, tangible expression of our commitment to educational access, equity, and inclusion.

  • The Class of 2021 Endowment

    Established to honor the Class of 2021 and provide financial aid to students, with priority given to children of alumni whose families might not otherwise be able to afford a Campbell Hall education.

  • The Damus Family Debate Team Endowment Fund

    Established by David Damus '83 and Edie Gelardi-Damus to provide support for Campbell Hall's middle and high school debate program. 

  • The Disney Family Fund for Diversity and Inclusion

    Established in 2018 by Sheri and Roy Disney to promote diversity and inclusion at Campbell Hall through need-based financial aid.

  • The Edgewater Park Family Endowment

    Established in 2019 by Michael Giacchino and family to provide long-term support for the Campbell Scholars Program.

  • Financial Aid Endowment

    Established to preserve the socioeconomic diversity in the student body.

  • General Endowment

    The Campbell Hall General Endowment supports all areas of the school and provides the Board of Directors with the greatest flexibility in meeting the school’s needs.

  • The Gores/Ressler Basketball Endowment

    Established by the Gores and Ressler families to strengthen the middle and high school basketball programs.

  • The Rev. Canon Norman Hull Endowed Scholarship Fund

    Established by Hal and Lisa Reynolds in honor of The Rev. Canon Norman Hull to provide need-based financial aid to elementary school families.

  • Jackie's Scholarship

    Established in honor of Jackie Callas to provide need-based financial aid to deserving Campbell Hall students.

  • Public Partnership Endowment

    Established to support Campbell Hall's outreach efforts to collaborate with public schools and non-profit organizations for the purpose of improving equity in educational opportunities.

  • The Wilbur D. May Endowed Scholarship Fund

    The Wilbur D. May Endowed Scholarship Fund was established with a generous gift by the Wilbur May Foundation for partial financial aid assistance for secondary students.

  • What is an endowment?

    A school’s endowment is a pool of financial assets, typically sourced from charitable donations, that is invested to grow the principal and provide additional income for future expenditures.

  • How does the endowment benefit Campbell Hall?

    Campbell Hall’s endowment is designed to keep the principal amount intact while using the investment income to support the annual operations of the school. Preserving the principal provides a perpetual source of income that the school can rely on forever into the future.

  • How does it differ from the CH Fund?

    CH Fund donations are used in their entirety during the year in which they are given to support the current priorities of the school. Gifts to the endowment are invested to preserve the principal for the long-term while the investment income is used to supplement the annual operating budget.

  • What does it support?

    The administration of the school and the Board of Directors have identified four priority areas essential to Campbell Hall’s future: 1) Strengthening the school’s outstanding academic and extracurricular activities; 2) Educating talented students from all backgrounds by ensuring a strong financial aid program for grades K-12; 3) Supporting and enhancing the school’s public partnerships programs; and, 4) Attracting and retaining an excellent faculty, including providing ongoing professional development opportunities.

    As of June 30, 2021, the market value of Campbell Hall’s endowment was just over $27 million.

  • What is CH’s endowment spending rate?

    The Board-approved endowment spending rate for the 2021-22 academic year is 4%.

  • Who sets the endowment policy?

    The school’s Finance Committee develops endowment policy for approval by the CH Board of Directors.

  • Why do some funds have names on them?

    Like many non-profit organizations, Campbell Hall offers its most generous endowment donors the opportunity to name a designated endowment fund after themselves or individuals they may wish to honor.

  • How can I put my name on a fund?

    Donors making gifts of $100,000 or more may direct their contribution to an existing fund or establish a new named endowed fund for a specific purpose which must be approved by the Headmaster. The named fund can recognize the generosity of the donors or honor a loved one or a retired faculty or staff member.

  • Can I create an endowment through my estate?

    Yes, a charitable bequest to Campbell Hall can be designated for the endowment. If the amount of the gift will be $100,000 or more, the donor may stipulate that it establish a new named fund.

  • Who invests the funds?

    Campbell Hall’s endowment is managed by external investment advisors overseen by the Finance Committee and the Board of Directors.
