Campbell Scholars Program



The school launched a three-year pilot program to further investigate the needs of the community, the school’s capacity, and the potential for key partnerships in this work. As part of its community of inquiry model, the program began with more questions than answers, and the organization took a learner’s mindset as they began operations and enrolled their first students.
Three middle schools were targeted for their close proximity to Campbell Hall and their high percentage of families qualifying for free and reduced lunch. Those schools (Pacoima Middle School Vista Middle School, and Valor Academy) provided qualifying 6th grade students with information regarding the program through their teachers and administrators. By March, twenty-one students were selected, and in July, this first cohort spent a full month at Campbell Hall with five Campbell Hall alumni and two Campbell Hall teachers.
In each subsequent year, the program learned and grew, adding program components and developing key partnerships with other institutions working in college access. A fourth middle school, Sepulveda Middle School, was added, and relationships were deepened at the other three. The program continued to enroll students, with a new cohort of twenty 6th grade students added in each year.
In 2017, in recognition of its successful pilot period, The Summer Enrichment Pilot Program was renamed Campbell Scholars Program and permanently embedded into the infrastructure and life of the school. To date the program has enrolled 56 students, with plans to enroll a new cohort of twenty students every year.
