NY Times Bestselling Author Virtually Visits 8th Grade

On Tuesday, January 18, 2022 New York Times bestselling author Neal Shusterman virtually visited 8th grade advisories.
The students had just finished reading Shusterman’s classic dystopian novel Unwind and had a number of questions for the author including how he comes up with such creative ideas for his books, where his inspiration for becoming a writer came from, and what his writing process entails. Mr. Shusterman explained: “So much of a story is dependent on a character’s growth or failure. I see antagonists as ‘failed heroes’ - they didn’t overcome whatever challenges they had - they were destroyed by them and became the villain. In following the characters through the story, the story grows around them…For characters to feel real and for you to care about them they have to feel like real people to you. They have to make decisions that real people would make.” Several of Mr. Shusterman’s novels are being adapted for TV and film including Scythe which is in development with Universal with Steven Spielberg producing and Unwind which is in production with Universal TV.
