Torrey Maldonado, Author and Teacher

Torrey Maldonado, history teacher and author of critically acclaimed middle grade books Secret Saturdays, What Lane, and Tight, visited the middle school to share how he started writing, discuss the important themes that run throughout his work, and read aloud from two of his novels.
He explained to the attendees that he wanted to write books that he needed to read when he was in middle school. “My books are thin,” he said, “but they are thick with complexities.” At the heart of his writing and teaching is great storytelling. “If I told my students I was writing a book about racial profiling…the criminalization of youth...white skin privilege and allies, there brains would go click...I knew there was something I wanted to say but in a way that the writing felt like a roller coaster. You don’t realize until you’re finished that that ‘I learned valuable things about friendship, being true to myself and to my identity, about being multidimensional and showing all of my sides.’”
