Big Sur Service Learning

On a recent outdoor service learning trip to Big Sur, a group of dedicated high school students and faculty chaperones worked together on two meaningful projects. The first was to beautify Camp Ocean Pines, a non-profit camp that served as the host site for the visiting students. They weeded an overgrown garden patch and planted a mix of native and non-native non-invasive plants and flowers.
The group later visited the New Camaldoli Hermitage, a community of Roman Catholic monks whose lives are dedicated to contemplation and prayer. The Hermitage is set high on a remote coastal mountainside and, despite driving rain, the students came prepared to help one of the oldest residents of the hermitage. “Birdie,” as she is known, is now in her mid-nineties and was the first woman who was allowed to live on the grounds of the hermitage. Invasive weeds had overtaken her view of the ocean and the volunteers set to work to clear the plants. Other volunteers cleaned bee boxes used for the production of honey. After the work was done, the volunteers were shown Birdie’s “secret garden” which contains the apiary and all were treated to a honey tasting. The students appreciated the sheer beauty of the Hermitage and the peace that enfolds the community.
