CH Student Volunteers Help Catalina Island’s Ecosystem

Right before the Thanksgiving break, a group of 16 students and 4 chaperones headed to Catalina island for an outdoor service learning weekend. They made camp at Little Harbor and explored the beautiful island, encountering some interesting wildlife along the way including Catalina Island foxes and bison.
The Catalina Island Conservancy, a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to preserving the island’s ecosystems and restoring endangered species and threatened habitats, provided the Campbell Hall volunteers with an in-depth lesson on the island’s geology, ecology, and human history. The CH group was then split into two teams and over the course of two days, removed countless invasive plants such as fennel, date palms, and tree tobacco that harm the indigenous habitats that offer shelter and food to the Island’s endemic and native animals. The volunteers then planted an impressive number of native scrub oak acorns with protective tubing (to keep the invasive deer from eating the seedlings), thereby fortifying existing native habitats and helping to restore Catalina’s native wildlife.
