Supporting Women and Children in Need

For the last three years, Skylar Quinn ‘20 has hosted a clothing and toiletry drive on campus for Alexandria House, a transitional residence for women and children who are in the process of moving from emergency shelter to economic stability. Skylar began volunteering with this nonprofit organization as her Bat Mitzvah project in seventh grade and says, “four years later I’m still finding meaningful ways to support their mission of helping women and their children to find homes and rebuild their lives. In a city with so many resources I find it heartbreaking that there are children without homes to call their own. I volunteer with Alexandria House to try and make a difference in the lives of kids who need it the most.”
This year, Skylar and her friends including Kaitlyn Michaels ‘20, Prerna Chugani ‘20, and Sara Ohannessian ‘20, promoted the drive by holding signs and collecting items in the elementary carpool. The Campbell Hall community showed tremendous generosity by donating over 60 bags of gently used and new clothing, blankets, books, games, and toiletries! Skylar, her mom Genia, and friend Elizabeth Fierstein ‘19, loaded two full cars and delivered the donations to Alexandria House, much to the delight of the residents.

Alexandria House addresses the pressing need for housing for women and children in need. The number of homeless women in Los Angeles has increased 55 percent since 2013 and California has the second highest homelessness rate for children in the United States. Skylar’s leadership has helped raise awareness about the difficulties faced by so many women and children in the Los Angeles area and the school’s response shows the deep compassion and caring of our entire CH community.
