“Eating Disorder Prevention: How to talk about food and body around your children and when to know if your child needs help.”

The nation has seen a sharp uptick in the anxiety that children and teens feel about their bodies. Younger children are reporting feeling insecure or unhappy with the way they look. Boys report interest in “steroid challenges” they see on social media and YouTube. Girls as young as 7 or 8 use filters to change the way they look and express fears about “aging.” Nonbinary and transgender students can struggle mightily with their body image, especially with the onset of puberty. The good news is that we can make a big impact on our children’s and teens’ feelings about their bodies and appearance.

In this session, Jesse will dive into conversations about food and body we have with and around our children and teens. She will discuss effective ways to talk about body image to support children and teens who may be experiencing negative feelings about themselves or their bodies. . Lastly, she will cover different types of eating disorders, how to recognize when your child or teen needs help, and how to get the support needed. The presentation will last one hour, followed by a 30-minute Q&A session.
