Journalism and the Community of Inquiry
We are so proud to learn that The Piper has again been awarded a Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) Gold Medal critique for the year 2018-2019.
This marks the fourth straight year the publication has won this award, and the students are rightly thrilled.
I know firsthand the high quality of student journalism at Campbell Hall because I get interviewed often. I don’t always agree with the paper’s editorial opinions, but I fiercely support their right to publish and admire their discipline when fact-checking and doing background for their stories. Recently I was interviewed about the “Varsity Blues” college admission scandal, and marveled at the reporter’s sophisticated critique of Vanity Fair’s approach, which is less rigorous than the methods taught to our own journalism students.
This generation is bombarded with so much propaganda from so many directions. They have no choice but to learn to read critically and work hard to discern trustworthy sources from fake news; and then, as pointed out in a recent Piper article on vaping, they have to take the difficult next step of acting in alignment with the facts rather than ignoring them. What I see every day on campus, though, gives me faith. The stakes are high, but so are their spirits. Campbell Hall students nurture a deep sense over the years of what is right and authentic versus what is fake and false, and that’s as important as any technical skill or content knowledge.

Canon Bull earned his Bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College, his Master’s in Philosophy from Boston College, and his Master’s in Divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary. He is an ordained priest in the Episcopal Church. Prior to joining Campbell Hall in 2003, Canon Bull served as Head of Trinity Episcopal School in New Orleans and as the Assistant Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, Dean of Students, Chair of the Diversity Committee, and Director of the Senior Humanities Program at Albuquerque Academy. He has served on the Boards of the National Association of Episcopal Schools, the Independent School Association of the Southwest, St. James’ Episcopal School, the Louisiana Children’s Museum, the Steering Committee for the Los Angeles School Heads, the Studio City Neighborhood Council, and has chaired the last two search committees for bishops of Los Angeles. He currently serves as the Chair of the Commission on Schools of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles and the Board of the Council for Spiritual and Ethical Education. He and his wife Katie have enjoyed raising their two sons as 13-year Campbell Hall students. Canon Bull enjoys tennis, hiking, and playing bridge in his spare time.
