From the Director

DECEMBER 17, 2021

Campbell Scholars Executive Director John Rue Any student who has recently experienced the college application process can attest to the intensity of the experience. For our Campbell Scholars, this process is particularly challenging because most are trying to do what no other adult in their lives have done: go away to a selective college on a full scholarship. This year, the seniors in our second cohort (2025) have applied to colleges all across the state and country in search for their next opportunity towards college graduation and professional success.

Four were named QuestBridge finalists. Seven applied early decision to a private college. And as is the tradition for seniors, all plan to spend their holiday season continuing the college application process.

The process marks a key milestone in the 10-year Campbell Scholars journey. Our mentors and staff have built long-standing relationships with scholars and their families for seven years so that we can provide meaningful support during the entire college process. Every previous program experience has sought to help scholars connect with supportive mentors, become exposed to new experiences, and take key steps towards their dreams. The application process, and the college essay in particular, is an important opportunity for scholars to reflect meaningfully on their aspirations, their growth, and their emerging sense of self. Our goal in supporting their work is not only to help them find opportunities to get into college, but to imbue kids with confidence and esteem to ensure that they succeed once they get there.

It is the process, not any admissions decision, that validates our belief in our scholars’ success. All of the scholars have stayed up late to research colleges, complete applications, and make revisions to college essays. They have contacted college representatives to learn more, express interest, and develop relationships. For most of our scholars, they are the only ones in their high schools applying early decision or to a private college. Their determination and fearlessness inspires our staff in ways that no admissions decision could possibly exceed.

After the application season is finished, there are more important milestones to come. Scholars have to persist through the challenges of freshman year, which our oldest cohort (2024) is halfway through. They need to pick a major and a career path despite having less than half the academic and professional exposure of their more privileged peers. They need to graduate on time and with a clear path and vision towards a career. Our work with our seniors is in many ways just beginning, but it’s still appropriate to marvel at the amazing work our scholars have accomplished thus far.
