Music

Instrumental Music

The elementary school's instrumental and choral music is part of the K-6 curriculum. Students are taught piano and keyboard, steel drums, and more! Campbell Hall also offers an after-school instrumental program. Violin and cello are offered to grades 1-6, and flute, clarinet, oboe, saxophone, and trumpet are offered to grades 4-6. Advanced instrumentalists in grades 4-6 make up Campbell Hall’s Elementary School Orchestra. Students perform for family and friends in programs throughout the year in various chapels and assemblies, as well as the After School Winter Performing Arts Recital, Grandparents’ Day and the Spring Arts Festival.

Campbell Hall's secondary instrumental music department is truly diverse, incorporating such varied genres as jazz, classical, pop, and world music into a thriving program. In addition to the numerous performing ensembles, the music department offers courses in Music Theory and AP Music Theory. Our students have the opportunity to perform in various platforms throughout the year.

Choral Music

Campbell Hall’s middle school choral program offers an introductory experience to a wide variety of styles and periods of music. We perform several times a year with works by Mozart, Lennon and McCartney, and other classical and contemporary composers. The middle school performs age-appropriate pieces that are dynamic and fun.

Campbell Hall’s secondary choral program stresses the development of both individual and group skills, including vocal technique, sight reading, an understanding of musical style, and an appreciation for the ethos of public performing. We perform works by Mozart, Lennon and McCartney, and other classical and contemporary composers.

Music History

The Music History course is offered to grades 11-12. This course offers a survey of Western European music from the time of Pythagoras (6th Century, BC) to the twenty-first century. The course incorporates elements of pop, rock, jazz, and non-Western music. Musical forms are placed in the social, religious, and political perspective of the times in which they were developed. The course is designed to give students practical means of recognizing and identifying all major genres and time periods of western music.

  • INTRODUCTION TO MUSIC MINI-COURSE 

    This mini-course focuses on music technology, basic elements of songwriting/composition, basic musicianship, and creative expression. Students will be able to bring their own musical interests to the curriculum, as they will complete short composition projects based on songs or pieces of their choosing. To solidify musical concepts and interpret them in their own voice, students will Garageband software to complete short composition projects. The course will culminate in a small composition project and class recital. (A four-week required course for 7th grade students.)
  • BEGINNING BAND PULL-OUT 

    Ever wanted to learn to play an instrument? This is the course for you! Flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, and trumpet are offered in this class. During the first class meeting, students will have the opportunity to try out different instruments to decide on the right one. (A year-long study hall pull-out course that meets once a week.)
  • CHOIR PULL-OUT 

    Students will experience the joy of learning a variety of classical and pop songs. The choir will participate in a wide variety of performance opportunities including school chapels and assemblies. No previous singing study required. (A year-long study hall pull-out course for 7th and 8th grade students.)
  • JAZZ BAND PULL-OUT 

    Saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, bass, drum, and piano players work together to rehearse and perform fun and exciting jazz charts and develop improvisational skills. Students will learn how to improvise, “comp,” and apply basic theory knowledge to their instruments, as well as perform for various concerts and assemblies. Audition required for guitar, bass, drum, and piano players. (A year-long study hall pull-out course that meets once a week.)
  • JAZZ WORKSHOP PULL-OUT 

    Rhythm section players (guitar, bass, drum, and piano) work together to rehearse and to perform fun and exciting jazz charts and to develop improvisational skills. Students will learn how to improvise, “comp,” and apply basic theory knowledge to their instruments, as well as perform for various concerts and assemblies. Audition required for guitar, bass, drum, and piano players. (A year-long study hall pull-out course that meets once a week.)
  • ORCHESTRA ELECTIVE 

    From “Pirates of the Caribbean” to Mozart’s “Marriage of Figaro,” the CH Orchestra is an exciting class for string, woodwind, and brass players interested in performing and improving their musicianship. Ensemble playing, rhythm reading, ear training, and music interpretation are a few of the skills learned in this fun performance class. (Grades 8-12; prerequisite: two years of experience on an instrument. No audition required.)
  • ORCHESTRA & WIND ENSEMBLE PULL-OUT 

    From “Harry Potter” to Mozart’s “Marriage of Figaro,” the Orchestra and Wind Ensemble is an exciting class for string, woodwind, and brass players interested in performing orchestral music for concerts, assemblies, chapels, and other special events. (A year-long study hall pull-out course that meets once a week.)

  • WORLD DRUMMING PULL-OUT

    This unique 7th-grade pullout course meets once a week for a hands-on experience in playing authentic non-pitched percussion instruments from around the world. Rhythmic styles are presented in a cultural context with a focus on replicating and preserving folkloric rhythmic styles mainly from West Africa, Brazil, and the Caribbean. Both stick and hand drumming techniques are incorporated as well as coordination and tone development. The group performs at various campus events, chapels, and is featured at the required bi-annual World Music Concerts. This course requires no musical experience but is a great supplement to anyone who already plays drum set or any instruments. (A yearlong study hall pull-out course for 7th graders. No experience necessary.)

  • MUSIC HISTORY 

    A survey of Western European music from the time of Pythagoras (6th Century, BC) to the twenty-first century. The course incorporates elements of pop, rock, jazz, and non-Western music. Musical forms are placed in the social, religious, and political perspective of the times in which they were developed. The course is designed to give students practical means of recognizing and identifying all major genres and time periods of western music. Through class work and concert attendance, the student becomes a discerning listener of great music performed well. (Grades 11-12; one semester; required for graduation)
  • HS BEGINNING CHORUS

    For students, especially freshmen, who may only be able to fit one semester of choral singing into their schedules. Students in this class are full-fledged members of the High School Chorus and participate fully in performances and evaluations. However, students do not receive credit towards fulfillment of the UC Performing Arts requirement. If a student is in first semester Beginning Chorus, he/she is welcome to sing at graduation if he/she attends Morning Choir rehearsals. (Grades 9-12; one semester)
  • HIGH SCHOOL CHORUS

    High School Chorus is a full year elective class that covers a variety of abilities. Within a repertoire suitable for developing voices, instruction is given in vocal techniques, musicianship, sight-reading, and performance practices. There are five main performances a year; two with the junior high choir, two that feature the High School Chorus and solo and small group acts from the ensemble, and our yearly performance at graduation. The year culminates in singing at the Walt Disney Concert Hall for high school graduation. (Grades 9-12)
  • JAZZ BAND

    This ensemble focuses on the performance and mastery of various styles of jazz such as swing, blues, bebop, funk, and Latin jazz. Improvisation, rhythm knowledge, note reading, ensemble skills, and jazz phrasing are emphasized as the group prepares for various performances. (Grades 9-12; prerequisites: department approval via audition for rhythm section players, department recommendation for wind players)
  •  JAZZ COMBO

    The Jazz Combo is a course for rhythm section players which focuses on the development of improvisational skills and jazz composition. Students will learn jazz standards, as well as compose their own original work for live performances throughout the year. Students in the class will also transcribe and analyze solos from jazz masters such as Miles Davis and Stan Getz. (Grades 9-12; prerequisites: department approval via audition for rhythm section players)
  • STEEL DRUM ORCHESTRA

    This course offers students a fun, rare, and unique hands-on opportunity to play the newest acoustic instrument invented in the 20th century, the steel pan. Students will learn how to play at a high level of precision and expression while learning intermediate to advanced arrangements from various genres of Caribbean and pop songs. This group performs at various campus events and chapels and is featured in the bi-annual World Music Concerts. In this musically challenging group, though no prior experience is necessary, a certain level of musical proficiency and professional rehearsal etiquette is required. (Grades 9-12; prerequisite: audition and teacher recommendations)
  • WORLD DRUMMING ENSEMBLE

    This rare and unique high school ensemble is a hands-on experience in playing authentic non-pitched percussion instruments from around the world. Rhythmic styles are presented in a cultural context with a focus on replicating and preserving folkloric rhythmic styles mainly from West Africa, Brazil, and the Caribbean. Both stick and hand drumming techniques are incorporated as well as coordination and tone development. The group performs at various on-and-off campus events and chapels and is featured in the bi-annual World Music Concerts. This course requires no musical experience but is a great supplement to anyone who already plays drum set or any other instruments. (Grades 9-12; prerequisite: none)
  • ORCHESTRA

    From “Pirates of the Caribbean” to Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro,” the CH Orchestra is an exciting class for string, woodwind, and brass players interested in performing and recording orchestral music. Ensemble playing, rhythm reading, ear training, and performance practice are a few of the skills learned in this fun performance class. (Grades 8-12; prerequisite: two years of experience on an instrument. No audition required.)
  • POPULAR MUSIC ENSEMBLE

    This course provides a rock band experience with full instrumentation that includes keyboard, drum set, percussion, vocals, rhythm guitar, lead guitar, and bass guitar. The group performs a student-selected repertoire of cover songs spanning popular music hits from every decade since the inception of the electric guitar. Beginner to intermediate musicianship and basic ensemble playing skills are taught. Playing by ear, rehearsal etiquette, and practice techniques are all emphasized in a performance-oriented context. Students rehearse in a peer-led band experience with teacher interjections as needed. The group performs at various campus events and chapels and is featured in the bi-annual Popular Music Concerts. All equipment is provided except for guitars basses, drumsticks, and guitar picks, which the students should own. Band mates are expected to come to class prepared to rehearse by learning and practicing individual parts outside of class before group rehearsals. (Grades 9-12; for students with at least two years of experience on primary instrument; prerequisite: teacher recommendation via placement audition)
  • POPULAR MUSIC ENSEMBLE, ADVANCED 

    This course provides an advanced rock band experience with full instrumentation that includes keyboard, drum set, percussion, vocals, rhythm guitar, lead guitar, and bass guitar. The group performs a student-selected repertoire of cover songs spanning popular music hits from every decade since the inception of the electric guitar as well as original music. In a performance-oriented context, students will practice advanced musicianship and ensemble playing skills such as playing by ear, professional rehearsal etiquette, and efficient rehearsal techniques. Students rehearse in a peer-led, self-motivated band experience with teacher interjections as needed. The group performs at various campus events and chapels and is featured in the bi-annual Popular Music Concerts. All equipment is provided except for guitars, basses, drumsticks, and guitar picks, which the students should own. Band mates are expected to come to class prepared to rehearse with the band by learning and practicing individual parts outside of class before group rehearsals. (Grades 9-12; for students with at least four years of experience on primary instrument; prerequisite: teacher recommendation via placement audition)
  • MUSIC THEORY 1A

    This first semester course lays the groundwork for success in music theory and ear training. It is recommended for anyone who wants to enhance his or her musicianship, production skills, composition tools, or understanding of music. During the course, students will be taught the mechanics of music, such as melodic and rhythmic notation, intervals, scales, and chords. Fundamentals in ear-training will also be a focus, with special attention to sight-singing and basic dictation. (Grades 9-12; prerequisite: none)
  • MUSIC THEORY 1B

    This second semester course continues the work of Music Theory IA and focuses on preparing students for AP Music Theory. Speed and mastery of music theory fundamentals will be a curricular priority, with an emphasis on fluency in areas such as key signatures, chords, inversions, rhythmic notation, and Roman numeral analysis. Ear training skills such as of melodic dictation, rhythmic dictation, chord quality identification, and sight singing will be a large component of the coursework. (Grades 9-12; prerequisite: Music Theory 1A or equivalency via placement test)
  • AP MUSIC THEORY

    This academic course continues the work begun in Music Theory I, with particular emphasis on the development of part-writing skills, harmonic analysis, and a comprehensive program of ear-training, sight-singing, and dictation. From a harpsichord to an iPad, students will use a variety of tools to prepare for the Advanced Placement exam while greatly improving their overall musicianship. (Grades 9-12; prerequisite: Music Theory I or department approval via placement test)
