Navigating AI and the Rise of Chatbot Relationships

Featuring top experts on AI and youth, this webinar offers a rare opportunity to hear directly from leaders shaping research, policy, and practice at the highest levels.

Parents and caregivers are increasingly asking what it means when young people turn to AI not just for answers, but for connection.

In this webinar, a distinguished panel including Michael Littman, former AI division director at the National Science Foundation; Jacqueline Nesi, widely recognized expert on youth mental health and technology whose work has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and CNN; Robbie Torney of Common Sense Media, the nation’s leading nonprofit for kids’ media and technology guidance; and Dr. Scott Kollins, Chief Medical Officer of Aura, a leading AI-powered digital safety platform for families, and will be moderated by Eileen Guo, senior reporter at MIT Technology Review.

Together, they will explore how chatbot relationships are shaping young people’s social development, mental health, and learning and how parents can respond with thoughtful guidance and appropriate boundaries. Attendees will have the opportunity to pre-submit questions and will leave with practical, research-backed strategies for supporting kids in an AI-driven world.

Michael L. Littman is University Professor of Computer Science and Associate Provost for Artificial Intelligence at Brown University. His research focuses on machine learning and decision-making. He received an outstanding educator award for his contributions to AI teaching and outreach. Littman recently served as Division Director for Information and Intelligent Systems at the National Science Foundation. His book, "Code to Joy: Why Everyone Should Learn a Little Programming" was published in October 2023 by MIT Press. He co-chaired and co-authored the National AI R&D Strategic Plan (2023 update) and is currently serving on the American Psychology Association's Rapid Expert Advisory Panel designed to offer lay-friendly guidance on the use of chatbots in mental health support.

Jacqueline Nesi, PhD, is a Clinical Psychologist, Assistant Professor at Brown University, and one of the word's leading experts on how technology impacts young people's mental health and development. She writes Techno Sapiens, a best-selling weekly Substack with over 50,000 subscribers, which has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian, Emily Oster's ParentData, and more. Her research and insights have earned widespread media coverage in print (e.g., NYTimes, WSJ, The Atlantic) and on TV (CNN, CNBC), and her writing has appeared in The Washington Post and Scientific American.

Robbie Torney is Head of AI & Digital Assessments at Common Sense Media, where he leads the organization's AI safety research and risk assessment methodology. Under his leadership, Common Sense has developed and conducted systematic risk assessments of major AI platforms including ChatGPT, Gemini, Meta AI, and Grok, as well as emerging categories like AI companion chatbots and AI toys. His work spans research, policy advocacy, and industry engagement. He has testified before Congress and the California Legislature on AI safety for youth and works directly with technology companies to shape industry standards. His research focuses on evaluating AI systems through frameworks that center developmental appropriateness and child safety by design.

Dr. Scott Kollins serves as Chief Medical Officer at Aura, the leading AI-powered online safety platform for individuals and families. With a robust background in clinical psychology and digital health, his career includes significant contributions to the development of digital therapeutics and mental health solutions, with over 200 scientific papers authored.

Eileen Guo is the senior reporter for features and investigations at MIT Technology Review, where she focuses on how the tech industry shapes our world. Previously she was a freelance reporter and audio producer for publications including The New York Times, Washington Post, National Geographic, NPR, and Wired, among others.
