CH student’s nonprofit organization helps those in need

Grace Kim ‘19 has been dedicated to serving the Los Angeles community for the last four years. As a Freshman, she was inspired to start the nonprofit America’s VOICE (Volunteer Organization Inspiring Compassion Everyday), so that she and like-minded students would have a platform to help those in need.

As President of America’s VOICE, Grace reaches out to underserved daycares and after-school programs to find younger students who need a little extra help and pairs them with volunteer tutors who have the needed skills. For instance, Grace is an accomplished cellist, so she provides lessons to low-income students who would not be able to afford private lessons otherwise. Other tutoring options may include music, dance, visual arts, or academics such as math, Korean, Spanish, English, and science.

In addition to providing individual services, America’s VOICE volunteers also help out at other charitable organizations such as Midnight Mission and Row Church, which provide necessities and services to the vulnerable Skid Row inhabitants, one of the largest homeless populations in the nation. Grace writes, “Many [volunteers] sacrifice their early Sunday mornings to come to Skid Row at 5:30 in the morning to distribute food to the homeless population in the area.” Volunteers also work with Heal the Bay for beach cleanups and Grace has even put together a music ensemble with fellow student musicians to perform at senior citizen centers.

As part of their outreach, Grace’s organization also runs an online magazine, America's VOICE Magazine, to raise awareness about some of today’s most pressing issues impacting our communities. America’s Voice is currently raising funds to provide basic necessities to Skid Row’s homeless population. If you would like to support this cause, please visit Grace’s Go Fund Me page.

Grace’s commitment to good is inspirational and she encourages other students to get involved and take action in any way that they find meaningful to help make our communities stronger and better for everyone.
