“It’s clear that the Campbell Hall faculty spent a great deal of time constructing the new Campbell Hall Advanced Inquiry program. Each year the Harvard Admissions Office considers applicants from thousands of secondary schools and other academic experiences. As part of our whole-person admissions process, we consider all information we have for each applicant. High-school transcripts and standardized tests are two components of this larger review and provide a common measure that allows some comparison among applicants from very different backgrounds and academic institutions. The fact that your faculty has been so excited about creating this new program will no doubt lead them to approach the coming years with renewed enthusiasm. Students are always inspired by teachers who care deeply about what they teach.”
“I applaud Campbell Hall for taking the brave step to rethink your high school curriculum and redefine what it means to be ‘college ready.’ Your decision aligns well with what is happening on college campuses across the country. It is essential that we work together to ensure that students are provided with the knowledge, skills, and habits of mind for living and leading in an interconnected world. It’s not enough to be a creative thinker; students must also be flexible and adaptive, able to work in diverse communities, communicate effectively, and view the world through a global lens. Campbell Hall’s new curriculum is exciting, innovative, and rigorous, and will provide students with the experiences and preparation that Boston University values in our admissions process.”
“I believe schools know their own students and can also measure the expertise possessed by their faculty in the best possible ways. It seems like Campbell Hall faculty have had the courage to identify areas where AP classes may not be effective in reaching the impressive academic goals Campbell Hall has established. I applaud the fact that there will now be some courses without the AP label, but which still contain the intellectual rigor that characterizes Campbell Hall. We already work with many schools that offer superb academic opportunities outside of the AP structure and almost without exception, I have found this to be much more of a positive statement on a school, rather than a negative one. Having the courage to closely examine the curriculum signifies to me an active, interested, thoughtful and caring faculty and administration who recognize that in the end it is the quality and depth of learning that is most important. If greater learning can take place, without sacrificing rigor, outside of the AP label, then Campbell Hall is, at least in my judgment, carrying through on its mission to be a 'community of inquiry committed to academic excellence...'
