Student Council Installation Speech: A Sign of Life
The United States’ Navy has confirmed it. The mysterious flying objects spotted over San Diego are, in fact, UFOs.
We don’t know what they are, where they came from, or what they’re doing here. So, it’s official. The aliens are here. I’ve thought a lot about how humanity will react when flying saucers filled with martians land on Mt. Rushmore, and I’ve reached this conclusion. There are two fates for humanity: we will either become a united global community that is prepared to take on the universe, or we will destroy ourselves before that can happen. Right now, it looks like humans aren’t going to make it long enough to actually get to meet these aliens from San Diego.
We are bombarded with news of terrorism, shootings, death, and violence; climate change is causing sea levels to rise, natural disasters are becoming more frequent, and 200 species go extinct every day. It feels like Gen-Z was passed a ticking time bomb, with no instructions on how to turn it off. It’s easy to collapse under this pressure. It’s easy to go through life ignoring these problems. It’s easy to surrender in a seemingly hopeless war. But we’re not a group that gives up easily.
Regardless of the scope of an issue, at Campbell Hall we stand up for what we believe in. I have seen you strike for gun control and for a green new deal. I have seen you stand up against sexual assault and show resilience in the face of adversity. Following the tragedies of this summer, freshmen you have put us all in awe by fundraising for the Trevor Project, and Lily creating the Noah Benardout Foundation, putting an end to DUI’s, you are saving lives. Campbell Hall, with the weight of the world placed on you, you do not falter - you protest, you kick, you scream. In contrast to our current society controlled by adults fueled by greed with no long term plan of human existence, we are marching head first into life, insisting there is a better world out there waiting to be made.
We make up a generation of changemakers. You all give me hope that we can rise to the world’s challenges and make this world a better place. You all give me hope that when the San Diego aliens descend, we will be able to greet them with open arms. Campbell Hall, we are strong and I have no doubt we will be able to conquer the world. Continue moving forwards, continue creating change, let’s continue to build a better home.

Canon Bull earned his Bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College, his Master’s in Philosophy from Boston College, and his Master’s in Divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary. He is an ordained priest in the Episcopal Church. Prior to joining Campbell Hall in 2003, Canon Bull served as Head of Trinity Episcopal School in New Orleans and as the Assistant Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, Dean of Students, Chair of the Diversity Committee, and Director of the Senior Humanities Program at Albuquerque Academy. He has served on the Boards of the National Association of Episcopal Schools, the Independent School Association of the Southwest, St. James’ Episcopal School, the Louisiana Children’s Museum, the Steering Committee for the Los Angeles School Heads, the Studio City Neighborhood Council, and has chaired the last two search committees for bishops of Los Angeles. He currently serves as the Chair of the Commission on Schools of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles and the Board of the Council for Spiritual and Ethical Education. He and his wife Katie have enjoyed raising their two sons as 13-year Campbell Hall students. Canon Bull enjoys tennis, hiking, and playing bridge in his spare time.
