Mock Trial (Students State Their Case)

Since 2002, Mock Trial has been a hallmark of the Campbell Hall 7th grade history curriculum. Each student takes on the role of an attorney, either prosecuting or defending Isaac Harris and Max Blanck, the owners of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory. During this landmark court case, Harris and Blanck were tried for manslaughter, accused of having locked exit doors during working hours which prevented almost 150 people from escaping a deadly fire on March 25, 1911.
Most of the victims were young immigrant women who had come to the United States in search of economic opportunity and personal freedom. At a time when women lacked the right to vote and had little voice in government, they leveraged the power of unions to fight for better wages, shorter working hours, and safer working conditions. The Triangle fire galvanized widespread activism and led to significant legislative reforms, including a 1913 amendment to the New State Constitution and the enactment of a compulsory workers’ compensation law.

By integrating these historical and legal contexts, the Mock Trial unit deepens students’ understanding of the American legal system and illustrates its vital role in shaping society and the lives of citizens.
