National Recognition for Science Fair Project

Congratulations to Harper T. ’32, who was selected as the 3rd-place winner of the 2026 American Statistical Society’s Virtual Science Fair (grades 5-8 category)! This competition challenges students to investigate a topic of interest and submit a video and essay highlighting their process and results.
For Harper’s project, which was based on her work from her sixth-grade science fair project, she tested whether her classmates could distinguish between human-written and AI-generated poetry. Her results surprised her: only 52% identified the AI content. The twist? Both poems she used were created by AI! Judges praised Harper’s strong research question and well-organized essay. “My experiment’s purpose was to make people see AI’s upcoming power,” said Harper. “I believe that artificial intelligence should be a tool and resource, rather than something to fear.” Elementary School Science Lab Teacher Kaya Beery shared, “I'm so proud of Harper and excited for her future endeavors in Science and Engineering."
