  California Resource Recovery Association Conference

  Members of our Facilities team attended the 2023 California Resource Recovery Association (CRRA) Conference where they learned about the latest efforts towards recycling and sustainable materials management in California and beyond. Campbell Hall’s commitment and focus on sustainability is a strategic priority.

  Caterpillars, Chrysalises, and Butterflies - Oh My!

  The Alumni Courtyard is aflutter! Campbell Hall’s Operations team planted milkweed in the Alumni Courtyard to serve as a waystation for monarch butterflies which, as caterpillars, feed exclusively on the leaves.

  Monarch butterflies embark on one of the world’s longest insect migrations, flying from Southern Canada to Mexico each fall. Waystations such as ours provide resources to allow this species to produce the next generation of butterflies necessary to continue their migration.
  
  The monarch butterfly, a candidate under the Endangered Species Act, is in dire need of help as their population has dramatically declined in recent years. Their distinctive orange and black wings dotted with white spots along the edges make them one of the most easily recognized (and beloved) butterflies.
  
  It is especially meaningful that the monarch garden is located in the Alumni Courtyard, a place that honors the contributions of alumni, all of whom have helped shape Campbell Hall into the school we love. Our current students, like scores of caterpillars in their chrysalises, will transform into beautiful butterflies one day, just like previous generations of CH students.
  
  Special thanks to Karl Frank, HS Science teacher and Sustainability Coordinator, Aubrey Rakoski, Associate Director of Advancement, Alumni Relations, Jonny Rodgers, Director of Community Service and Outdoor Service Learning Coordinator and Elizabeth Tremante, Secondary Visual Arts teacher for bringing this idea to the school! We look forward to having the monarch butterflies join our community each spring for years to come!

  Students' Fieldwork Helps the Environment

  Students in AP Environmental Science complete diversity survey and water quality assessment work for the Santa Monica Mountains Resource Conservation District

  On Oct. 3, high school AP Environmental Science students headed to Malibu Lagoon to complete a diversity survey and water quality assessment for the Resource Conservation District of the Santa Monica Mountains (RCDSMM). Each year, the RCDSMM relies heavily on community volunteers to collect data related to overall lagoon health and functioning.
  
  The Malibu Lagoon is an important wetland and had been listed as an “impaired body of water” by the Environmental Protection Agency for many years. Several conservancies and agencies joined together to improve water quality and restore wildlife habitats. In 2013, contaminated soil was removed, construction was completed to reshape the channels to improve water circulation, and native vegetation was planted. Since then, Campbell Hall students have been involved in helping to collect data that is included in long-term monitoring reports sent to the state. This volunteer effort is an ideal way for students to connect service learning with the curriculum, putting the knowledge and skills they acquired in the classroom to the best use possible - helping the environment.

  Green Teams Unite

  The high school club, with their faculty teachers Monica Ley & Allison Shrage, spent time mentoring 3rd & 4th grade students by showing them how to tend their garden.

  All the kids loved getting their hands in the dirt as they pruned, weeded, and harvested leafy green vegetables, fragrant mint, purple beets, juicy red tomatoes, and sun-kissed zucchini. With the support of Principal Robin Frank and elementary teachers Lindsay Allen-Blum & Dani Staahl, the high school club discussed the importance of healthy eating and, with the wide array of gorgeous fresh vegetables that the students had grown themselves, it was easy for the little ones to understand that healthy foods can be tasty too! The high school students take time out of their busy schedules each month to share important information about urban agriculture and to serve as role models for these budding activists who will continue to tend future organic gardens.

  Growing Young Innovators

  Every spring, elementary school principal Robin Frank works with kindergarten students in the garden. Each kindergartener plants seedlings and, as a culmination of their science unit, the students make a delicious salad together.

  Sustainability in Theory and Practice

  Campbell Hall's Director of Facilities and Sustainability Mike Panman gave a presentation to CHAI Environmental Science classes on the school's newly installed eGauge system which monitors energy consumption.

  Students were able to see in real time the highest energy consumer in our building, HVAC usage and the impact on energy when the system was switched off for just a few minutes. The eGauge system is just one of the many ways Campbell Hall tries to increase energy efficiency and limit our carbon footprint.

  Reduced Waste Wednesdays (and every day!)

  In an effort to reduce our ecological footprint as a community, Campbell Hall Elementary School promotes and encourages packing reduced waste lunches.
