People of Color Conference & Student Diversity Leadership Conference
In December, nine CH faculty/staff/admin and four students attended the People of Color Conference & Student Diversity Leadership Conference in St. Louis, MO.
Some attending students shared their insights:
“In our larger groups, we formed smaller units called "family groups," comprising individuals from diverse backgrounds. Within these groups, I gained insights into cross-cultural experiences and the dynamics of relationships between different cultures. Engaging in open discussions, we addressed various pressing issues in our current lives, sharing our perspectives. The environment we created provided a safe space for both expression and active listening.” -- Anabelle P. ‘24
“My experience in the Asian Affinity group was great. Being around people who shared many of the same experiences and struggles was extremely comforting, and I found solidarity in things I wasn’t cognizant of, like the lack of other Asians in many sports. We also discussed a plethora of topics including academic competitiveness, parental pressure, and food. But most of all the affinity group was about affinity.” -- Carson P. ‘25
“I learned that diversity does not solely apply to race, but to all areas on the identity wheel. In our Family Groups, we focused on 8 of them: race, ability, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, family structure, religion, and age. All of these characteristics that compose one’s identity are important, yes, their intensity in one’s life may differ but they still define how someone sees themselves and the world around them.” -- Chloe C. ‘24
