Blog: Epiphany
Christmas is not a one-day celebration but a 12-day season, followed by the Feast of the Epiphany on January 6. The name Epiphany comes from the Greek epiphaneia, meaning “appearance” or “manifestation,” and refers to God’s extraordinary incarnation into history in a human baby. The Epiphany story focuses not on Jesus initially but on three learned and spiritually sensitive men who see signs in the stars and undertake the appropriate pilgrimage.
I love this feast day because it asks the important question: how should we respond to God? Every act of God in history is an invitation to humanity to join in the adventure. My favorite Epiphany song is not a traditional hymn but a folk song by David Wilcox called “Waiting for a Miracle” that honors “these three guys” following a “song [that] is bright and clear.” In contrast, “people all along the highway…just shook their heads…and went back to bed.” If we don’t recognize creative opportunities as they emerge, we may indeed spend our entire lives ignoring powerful invitations as we wait for something that better fits our preconceived notions.
2023 brings great adventure to us at Campbell Hall, for sure! On Tuesday, January 3, as is our tradition on our New Year’s in-service day, the faculty and staff sat in contemplative quiet as we meditated on what life has in store for us this year. We acknowledged the health and emotional issues inevitable in a large community, but gave deep thanks for the history and community that support and inspire us all. We, the faculty, staff, and administration of Campbell Hall, are honored to serve this school’s special mission, and look forward to working with all our families to sing a song that is bright, clear, and full of epiphanies!
