Middle School Discussions on Biased Language and Hate Speech

On May 11, MS DEIJ Coordinator Erik Koski and Associate Head of Community Engagement Christopher Dennis, virtually met with all middle school advisories to talk about biased language and slurs, directly answering questions that the students had submitted in advance.
Handouts were provided that summarized various ways students can respond "in-the-moment" to hateful language. In the following week's advisory, students chose from a list of scenarios and worked in small groups deciding on how they would respond. On June 2, Mr. Koski talked with the students about biased language as it is used in online gaming and social media. On June 4, students viewed a video about online hate speech in their advisories.
