The Community Compost Continuum
Evergreens is a student-led organization that focuses on connecting students with the natural world as well as working with the school’s surrounding community to advance environmental and sustainability goals.
One such project, “The Community Compost Continuum,” is striving to create a small-scale, sustainable food growing operation right here on campus. Evergreens secured a micro-grant from Tutor-Corps for the purchase and installation of a large compost bin. Bevaris, which operates the Campbell Hall Cafe, will supply the organic vegetable matter needed as a base for the compost. Materials such as coffee filters, shredded paper, and dried leaves collected by students serve to chemically balance the vegetable matter and help to turn it into rich fertilizer for plants. The fertilizer is then used in the seedling nursery which supplies new plants to the vertical garden towers, an automated vertical gardening system located on the top level of the Arts & Education Center. The vegetables and herbs harvested from these towers are donated to MEND (Meet Each Need with Dignity) each month, completing the cycle. Campbell Hall is reducing food waste on campus as well as providing healthy, organic food to people in need. The Community Compost Continuum is a model for sustainability in action.
Evergreens is open to all high school students and provides a nurturing, fun, collaborative environment in which members are empowered to make positive change in their community and the environment.
