Human Development

Our Human Development program fosters social emotional learning, plays an integral role in the fulfillment of the school’s mission, and is therefore fully integrated into the life and culture of the school. The elementary program serves to meet the developmental needs of all students through strengthening of students’ emotional intelligence skills, with particular focus on mindfulness, self awareness, emotional management, responsible decision making and healthy interpersonal relationships. In 4-6th grades, human development classes offer an ongoing opportunity for our students to continue to strengthen their emotional intelligence skills through mindful listening and speaking practices. Students are able to derive deep meaning through connecting their own personal experiences to those of their peers and the larger community. By the 6th grade promotion to middle school, our students are able to learn from a perspective of joyous inquiry, rather than pressure-filled apprehension. They have a solid knowledge base and have significantly developed both intellectual and personal skills, the ability to play, work, and learn cooperatively, and have experienced tremendous emotional, spiritual, and social growth.
