Supporting Girls Education
The Campbell Hall Girls Learn International Club (GLI) held a bake sale to support the Veerni Institute in India. This Institute educates and empowers adolescent girls from poor villages in desert areas around Jodhpur, India by providing access to secondary education. They provide boarding, health facilities, and education to girls in an effort to prevent forced marriage at a young age and remove barriers that keep them from attending school.
Kaylin Kim, GLI chapter leader and Prerna Chugani, vice leader, write, “Not only did we (GLI) wish to become more informed advocates for universal girls' education, we wanted to help protect the students' right to receive a quality education. The Veerni Institute believes that true democracy depends on the full participation of women in their communities, and that education is the most effective way to secure this need. By delaying child marriage and allowing girls to exercise their basic human rights and to make independent life choices, the Veerni Institute’s actions align with what the Girls Learn International club at Campbell Hall stands for.”
The bake sale, which included homemade samosas and peanut butter cookies, raised $190 and will provide 6 girls with textbooks, stationery, and other much-needed resources that will allow them to be successful at school.
