High School Community Service Coordinator:  David Watts, wattsd@campbellhall.org

Campbell Hall defines community service as

  • Delivered directly to constituents of a charitable organization registered as a “not for profit” institution or organization or participation in a project sponsored by such an organization
  • Provided to at least one person, other than the student and/or the student’s relative, and benefiting either the Campbell Hall community or the “community at large”
  • Provided separately from a service activity for which the student is already receiving school or organizational credit or recognition
  • Performed without compensation to the student
  • Performed outside of scheduled school academic periods
  • NOT mandated by a court of law

Community Service Mission

The mission of the Campbell Hall community service program is

  • To uphold the principles of social responsibility, community involvement, and thoughtful action
  • To help form young adults who possess strong personal values and high self-esteem, and who realize their potential to participate effectively and enthusiastically in a global society
  • To prepare our students to deal with the complexities of today’s world by acting in their community
  • To provide students with opportunities to enhance their sense of responsibility and to experience helping others, exploring new roles, and enriching their lives
  • To promote service opportunities in a variety of areas including the environment, youth, those with special needs, health, hunger, and poverty
  • To increase Campbell Hall’s involvement in the outside community
  • To promote and provide structured community service opportunities for students, staff, and faculty
  • To foster relationships with not-for-profit organizations and individuals in order to provide opportunities for service to the Campbell Hall students

For the purpose of accomplishing our Community Service Mission, Campbell Hall helps us:

  • Know through experience the relationship between empathy and responsibility
  • Apply classroom knowledge to real life experiences
  • Understand our responsibility as citizens in the larger community
  • Accept new challenges
  • Acquire life skills
  • Develop self-esteem based on a sense of accomplishment
  • Develop and articulate a moral center that can fortify a community, a place where values of empathy, compassion, and caring form a basis of civic responsibility
  • Realize that by playing a role in contributing to our community, we will help our community thrive, making the community a better and safer place
  • Learn that despite the cynicism, indifference, and isolation that exist in our society, when individuals volunteer, they can make a difference
  • Discover that while one individual may make a small change, if we volunteer as a community and a school, we can make a huge difference and change the world for the better

Community Service Requirements

Each Campbell Hall high school student is required to

  • Perform a minimum of 20 hours of community service per year (Service hours above the required amount cannot be counted towards the following year’s requirements, although extra hours will be counted and documented.)
  • Complete each year’s 20 community service hours within the period beginning June 1 and ending May 31 (Hours volunteered over the summer will be credited toward the next school year.)
  • Complete a minimum of 15 hours of each year’s community service for an outside organization; a maximum of 5 service hours per year may be completed to benefit the Campbell Hall community internally (see School Service section below).
  • Complete a minimum of 80 hours over four years of high school (20 hours per year) as a graduation requirement (This does not include hours required by academic classes or clubs/organizations for membership.)
  • Submit the number of hours served and a completed community service form [form #1] to the Director of Community Service within 30 days after the service has been completed (if the service is ongoing, submit hours on a monthly basis)

Students in grade 12 who do not complete the required 20 hours of community service by the required deadline will not receive a diploma until these hours have been completed and documented.

Each student’s community service must

  • Follow the spirit outlined in the definition
  • Be voluntary without pay
  • Be performed by the individual student
  • Be associated with a “not-for-profit” organization (or activity)
  • Be performed in the presence of another person (other than the student’s family)

School Service

Up to 5 hours of a student’s Community Service 20-hour requirement per year may be fulfilled with approved school service that benefits the Campbell Hall community.  Ways to help include guiding prospective students around campus (during Secondary Prospective Days or regular school days), helping with the set up and food at the Baccalaureate Luncheon (for juniors to apply to their senior year service only), and assisting staff members with various tasks.  These service hours must be approved in advance by obtaining the signature of the High School Community Service Coordinator, the High School Assistant Principal, or the High School Principal on the Proposal Form.  Verification forms also must be filled out after the work is complete, just as with service to communities outside of Campbell Hall.
