Varsity Boys Basketball - Campbell Hall freshman Aaron Holiday scores 54 in loss to Simi Valley By Jacob H. Pollon Special to the Daily News Posted: 06/14/2011 11:56:06 PM PDT Updated: 06/15/2011 12:47:47 AM PDT
There are many schools in the area welcoming some elite freshman boys' basketball players, but none will likely be as good as Campbell Hall ninth-grader Aaron Holiday.
Simi Valley won in coach Chris Printz's debut Tuesday at the Crespi tournament with an 89-80 victory against the Vikings, but the 14-year-old Holiday stole the show.
Holiday scored 54 points, including 28 free throws, and put on a display even his brother, Philadelphia 76ers star Jrue Holiday would have been proud of.
Holiday was not afraid at all in his first high school varsity game and displayed toughness and competitiveness learned from older brothers Jrue and Justin and sister Lauren, who has also made a name for herself entering her senior year at Campbell Hall.
"I'm surprised I did so well because I thought it would be tougher," Holiday said. "Eighth grade was easy, so I didn't think it would go like it did (Tuesday), but it wasn't like I thought it would be. Getting beat up by my brothers and sister has made a difference. And playing against 16-year olds, too."
Holiday had 34 first-half points, but Simi Valley's depth and experience allowed it to prevail, although Printz had high praise for the impact freshman.
"Amazing. Maybe most impressive was his stamina. Most guys would wilt under the pressure but he just kept going," Printz said. "Credit to him. I wish we would have kept him off the free-throw line a bit more. He is a great player."
Holiday showed exceptional leadership skills with San Diego State-bound Cole Huff sidelined with an injury.
"I love him," Campbell Hall coach Steve Wachs said. "He did well today."
Holiday did a little bit of everything but it was his relentless play and willingness to sacrifice his body in the lane that was so impressive for such a young player.
"I feel like it's my team, mine and Cole's," Holiday said. "I would love to be a captain."
Even with such a stunning performance that left coaches and scouts in attendance impressed, Holiday still has a big critic, his mother Toya.
"He still needs to learn how to get his teammates involved," she said. "He needs to work on his defense."
Holiday will be in action at 3:30 p.m. today at Crespi against Damien and this weekend at the War on the Floor tournament at Pierce College.

JV Boys Volleyball - HS JV Boys' Volleyball win at home in the spirit of Coach Q after a beautiful memorial service on the court he built. Emotion ran high for the volleyball program for the past week, but players, coaches, and managers channeled their energy to focus on this home match. Campbell Hall players came out swinging hard spikes and digging up high speed hits. Taylor Maxfield continued to connect with Sean Holohan on running the middle attacks. Will Reed maintained the Viking's defense in a well organized manner. In the spirit of Hawaii, Campbell Hall cruised to a 2-0 victory over St. Monica Catholic School.
JV Boys Volleyball - JV Boys' Volleyball won on the road for Coach Q. A come from behind win in see-saw battle with La Canada High School. Campbell Hall won the deciding set 15 to 13 after battling back to win the 2nd set. Taylor Maxfield led the team with assists. Nat O'toole led the team with kills-attempted. William Reed and Scott Thompson led the team with digs. Sean Holahan led the team in blocks. A great effort by players coming off the bench to energize the team to start the comeback and eventually win the match.
HS JV Boys team will not conduct practice next Monday due to the Memorial Service for Coach Q.
JV Boys Volleyball - 3/5/10 Add 1st place to JV Boys Volleyball Team Resume!!
1st place finish for Boys JV Volleyball Team at Burbank Tournament in pool plays, and 3rd place finish overall in Gold Division playoffs. Our JV Boys Volleyball Team beat 4 big public schools team in one beautiful volleyball Saturday. First match in the morning, the Vikings defeated Simi Valley High School in 2 straight sets in an ultimate battle of middle blockers. In the next match, again in dominating fashion, our JV Boys Volleyball Team swept Burroughs High School in 2 straight sets in a highly competitive defensive match with rallies back and forth over 5 minutes long each. The winnings continued against Beverly Hills High School and Burbank High School at their home court in a see-saw battle. The JV Boys Volleyball Team came away from the single elimination tournament for being the only small private co-ed school to finish in the final four out of 20 teams.
Varsity Boys Basketball - Campbell Hall has a dynamic talent in high-scoring Austin McBroom, who committed to Central Michigan last week, but the Vikings continue to miss injured post player Cole Huff, a 6-7 senior who has signed with San Diego State but is out with a knee injury.
“Huff is out for the season, but we’re looking OK,” Campbell Hall coach Steve Wachs said. “We’ve kind of filled the void by committee, but over the last few games Zack Klein has done a great job and has really improved his offensive production. He’s stepping up and hitting tough shots.”
McBroom’s late scholarship offer came a week after national signing day, and Wachs said McBroom “seems pretty happy.”
“I’m going to miss him, but he better buy some parkas because I don’t think he realizes how cold it’s going to be up there,” Wachs said.
McBroom is the only link to Campbell Hall’s championship reign with Jrue Holiday that included three state titles over a four-year period ending in McBroom’s freshman year.

Varsity Football - Campbell Hall standout Austin McBroom has been named to the All-East Valley Division team as a utility player. By Lee Barnathan
People who watch Austin McBroom might be amazed at his ability to excel on the football field, basketball court and baseball field. Just search YouTube for examples.
McBroom’s exploits on the diamond and court are for another day. As for football, McBroom has been named to the All-CIF Southern Section East Valley Division team as a utility player.
“Actually, I’ve always wanted to play football ever since I was a little kid,” McBroom told Fox Sports Net. “I enjoy running the ball. I enjoy catching the ball. I enjoy having a blast with my teammates on the field and off the field.”
The fans enjoyed him on the field. In leading the Vikings to a 7-4 record that included a playoff berth, McBroom was a factor as a rusher, receiver and kick returner, making most of his contributions while being covered by more than one defender.
His main threat was in the air. McBroom caught 36 passes for 706 yards and six touchdowns. That included a season-high eight catches for a season-high 187 yards against Villanova Prep of Ojai (a 39-26 home win) and a three-reception, 136-yard day against Marshall of Pasadena, resulting in a 48-7 rout.
As a running back, McBroom rushed 47 times for 500 yards and seven TDs. That included big games against Kilpatrick and St. Margaret’s. In beating Kilpatrick 70-44, McBroom rushed for 132 yards and three TDs on only six carries. In a 17-10 losing effort against St. Margaret’s, McBroom reached season highs of nine carries and 155 yards with a touchdown.
Against Montclair Prep, he returned two kickoffs for touchdowns, running the ball back 82 and 89 yards.
“I wouldn’t kick to him. There’s no way,” Campbell Hall coach Russ Gordon said. “I think that’s a big risk.”
Varsity Boys Basketball - By Jacob H. Pollon Special to the Daily News Posted: 01/25/2011 10:39:10 PM PST Updated: 01/26/2011 10:35:02 AM PST
The Montclair Prep boys' basketball team accomplished something Tuesday it has not done in a long time.
The Mounties beat Campbell Hall for the first time since sweeping the Vikings in 2002 with an 81-70 Alpha League victory.
The last victory before then was a Southern Section Div. V-AA semifinal playoff victory in 1996 at Notre Dame High.
"I can't believe it has been that long, but we also weren't in the same league for several years but it was a good win for us," Montclair Prep coach Greg Patterson said.
Trey Dickerson led four Mounties in double figures with 26 points, including three 3-pointers and six free throws in the second half.
Jake Boger scored 18 points, Max Fried had 16 points and Amonte Dees added 11 points in a balanced effort.
"Jake played extremely well and has been our most consistent player," Patterson said. "He plays hard all the time."
The Mounties got off to a quick start thanks to two first quarter 3-pointers from Fried and several easy layups in transition.
Montclair Prep held a seven-point lead at halftime but Campbell Hall made a comeback.
Austin McBroom, who finished with 32 points, led the charge as the Vikings went ahead 40-39.
However, Montclair Prep (17-5, 4-1) responded with a14-2 run and led the rest of the way.
Fried and Dickerson each had three-point plays and Dees made two baskets.
"We got a little lazy at the start of the third quarter but after we got our energy back up we finished the job," Dickerson said. McBroom tried to rally the Vikings time and time again but fell short despite 17 second half points, including making all 10 of his free throws.
K.J. Smith scored 13 points and Skylar Jones and Zack Klein each had 11 for Campbell Hall (13-8, 2-3).
"We played great," Campbell Hall coach Steve Wachs said. "The operation was successful, but the patient died."
Montclair Prep firmly put itself into second place, a game behind Windward.
The Mounties travel to play the league-leading Wildcats on Friday with a share of first place on the line.
"We have to stop their big guys, rebound and not turn the ball over," Dickerson said. "We have to play smart."
Varsity Boys Basketball - Quick, check to see if Kobe Bryant stayed in Washington. Is Allen Iverson really in Europe? Was Deron Williams really with his Utah teammates preparing for New Orleans?
Or were they wearing No. 5 for the Campbell Hall boys' basketball team Tuesday night?
The roster said that was senior Austin McBroom out there scoring 33 points to lead the undefeated Vikings to a 65-61 victory over Community Charter of Pacoima at Panorama High.
But McBroom made Kobe-like moves as he drove to the basket, drew two or three players and still banked in a shot. He channeled Iverson--his favorite player, he said--with pull-up jumpers.
"I can score when I have to," McBroom said without a trace of arrogance. "Whatever the defense gives me, I have to adjust."
Coach Steve Wachs is not surprised, since he knows the difference between necessary scoring and selfish scoring.
"If he jacked up 33 threes, that's selfish," Wachs said. "We preach shot selection and finding the open shot, and if he's open, it's not selfish when he has the open shot."
Campbell Hall (7-0) played without two starters. Zack Klein was sick and K.J. Smith was participating in a mandatory class project. The Vikings used just one sub, so McBroom did the "necessary" and led the Vikings over the taller Titans (4-4).
He played all 32 minutes and scored 11 of his team's 17 first-period points and all seven of Campbell Hall's fourth-period points, including a put back with 1 minute, 45 seconds to play that gave the Vikings a 64-61 lead. He added a free throw with 15.5 seconds remaining.
"I really, really respect his game," said Community Charter coach Les Bean, who likened McBroom to Williams. "He was unlike any player I've seen this year because of his cleverness. He really put that team on his back, and they really have something there."
McBroom made 13 of 16 free throws. The Vikings were 22 of 25 from the line, compared with 3 of 13 for Community Charter.
Cole Huff scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Campbell Hall.
Community Charter got 12 points and 18 rebounds from Lawrence Domingo, 12 points off the bench from Gavin Wright and 10 points from Brandon Harris.

Varsity Boys Basketball - Campbell Hall High’s boys basketball team is not on life support yet, but the Vikings are running out of time.
“The operation was a success, but the patient died,” was how coach Steve Wachs described Tuesday’s 81-70 Alpha League loss at Montclair Prep.
Translated, Campbell Hall (13-8, 2-3) did many things right but too many things wrong to beat the Mounties (17-5, 4-1), as the Vikings, once among the San Fernando Valley’s most feared programs during the Jrue Holiday era, lost their third in a row and sixth over the past eight games.
Among the right:
Four players—not just Austin McBroom—scored in double figures. Beside McBroom’s game-high 32 points and five assists, guard K.J. Smith scored 13 points with six assists, and Skylar Jones and Zack Klein each scored 11 points. The Vikings fell behind by 10 points numerous times and each time cut the lead, usually by forcing the taller Mounties to put the ball on the floor, which led to McBroom, Smith and Jeremy Clark getting steals and causing turnovers. Campbell Hall trailed 37-30 at the half but started the second half with a 9-2 run in 3 minutes, 14 seconds to tie the score. Among the wrong:
After tying the score in the second half, Montclair Prep scored 11 points in a row as part of a 14-2 run that put the Mounties ahead 53-42 with 1:12 remaining in the third period. They never trailed again. Campbell Hall, playing without injured 6-7 center Cole Huff, had almost no answer for 6-6 post player Jake Boger, who scored 18 points off the bench. Nor could the Vikings stop guard Trey Dickerson, who scored 12 of his 29 points in the fourth period. Campbell Hall missed eight free throws and finished 14 of 22 from the line. And McBroom had some hard luck when five times he drove to the basket and missed the shot as he was fouled. “Quick shots would lead to transition baskets for Montclair Prep, and that’s what happened,” Wachs said.
To sum up: “We made a good effort but we need to cut down on our mental mistakes,” Jones said.
CAMPBELL HALL (70)

Varsity Boys Basketball - Sierra Canyon 60, Campbell Hall 53: The Trailblazers (14-3, 2-1) trailed by seven points midway through the second quarter but used a 15-5 run to end the half and keep the Vikings at bay in the Alpha League win at Shepherd of the Hills Church in Porter Ranch.
Campbell Hall was without the services of San Diego State-bound junior forward Cole Huff, who has been bothered by a leg injury suffered in late December at the Torrey Pines tournament.
Freshman Marsalis Johnson and junior Julian Brooks scored 13 of the 15 points during the run and keyed a 10-2 run to open the second half for Sierra Canyon.
"Our guys are fighting hard all the time and we have found ways to win this week," Sierra Canyon co-coach Ryan Silver said.
Johnson scored 12 points, Jahmel Taylor and Brooks each had 11 and Bryan Alberts and Jesse Howell each had 10 in a balanced effort for the young Trailblazers.
Austin McBroom did his best to keep Campbell Hall (13-6, 2-2) in the game with 36 points, including 22 in the second half. The senior made 13 of 15 free throws.
The Vikings closed to within three points with 36 seconds remaining but Howell scored on an easy layup to seal it.
Sierra Canyon has also been aided by the return of Daniel Cohen, a key member of last year's team that reached the Div. V-A championship game.
Cohen has provided a steady hand at guard and valuable veteran leadership.
"Daniel is a total-winner and will be huge for us as we move forward toward the playoffs," Silver said.

Varsity Girls Tennis - By Erik Boal, Staff Writer Posted: 01/01/2011 10:19:20 PM PST Updated: 01/02/2011 12:07:54 AM PST
PLAYER OF THE YEAR
SABRINA SANTAMARIA, Campbell Hall, Sr.
More than any player in the Vikings' illustrious history, Santamaria thrived on the big stage, consistently excelling when the stakes were the highest.
Although a knee injury slowed the USC signee in a loss to teammate Sarah Lee in the Alpha League final, it would be the last time Santamaria wouldn't walk off the court a winner.
She didn't drop a set during Campbell Hall's run to back-to-back Div. I crowns, then cruised into her first singles championship, overcoming a 6-5, second-set deficit against Woodbridge freshman Mayo Hibi to prevail 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2 at Seal Beach Tennis Center, becoming only the fourth Southern Section girls' player to win singles, doubles and team titles in a career.
DOUBLES TEAM OF THE YEAR
VALERIE THONG and ZOE KATZ, Campbell Hall, Jr. and Soph.
After his doubles lineup accumulated a combined two games in three sets against Katz and Thong in a Sept. 21 nonleague match, University High of Irvine coach John Kessler called the duo: "the best high school doubles team in the country." The two-time Southern Section champions lived up to the billing, becoming the first team to repeat since Pacific's Carol Christian and Pat Shellhammer in 1978-79 following a 6-2, 6-0 victory in the final over Thousand Oaks' Alison Ho and Savannah Ware. Katz and Thong have lost just three sets in two seasons for the Vikings, but none in the Southern Section doubles tournament, where they allowed eight games in 14 sets this year.
SARAH LEE, Campbell Hall, Sr.
Although Lee's pursuit of her first career Southern Section singles title ended in the quarterfinals, the Michigan signee still captured her second straight league championship by defeating teammate Sabrina Santamaria. Lee was instrumental in the Vikings' undefeated season, sweeping Dana Hills in the Div. I final to help Campbell Hall secure back-to-back titles and the third team championship in her career.
CONNER CALABRO and AVA SADEGHI, Campbell Hall, Soph., and Sr.
Sadeghi reached the Southern Section quarterfinals with freshman Alexis Pereira, but some of her biggest victories came during the regular season and Div. I playoffs with Calabro. Despite competing against the toughest schedule in program history, Calabro and Sadeghi were up to the challenge, helping Campbell Hall become the first local girls' team to repeat as Div. I champion.
NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR
ALEXIS PEREIRA, Campbell Hall, Fr.
From her first practice in August, it was clear Pereira was going to have a profound impact on Campbell Hall's success, adding more depth to one of the nation's most talented rosters. Pereira demonstrated maturity beyond her years, recording several clutch singles victories, before teaming with Ava Sadeghi to reach the Alpha League doubles final -- pushing teammates Zoe Katz and Valerie Thong to three sets -- and the Southern Section quarterfinals, where a wrist injury cost her in a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 setback to Thousand Oaks' Alison Ho and Savannah Ware.

MATCH OF THE YEAR
Southern Section singles final, Dec. 3
Even team titles were upstaged by the final performance of Sabrina Santamaria's exceptional high school career.
Two points away from losing to Woodbridge freshman Mayo Hibi in the championship match at Seal Beach Tennis Center, the Campbell Hall senior rallied for a 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2 victory to not only secure the Vikings' first Southern Section singles title, but complete a career triple crown, following a doubles win with Sarah Lee in 2008 and three team championships.

The Campbell Hall boys' basketball team found out firsthand that trudging through Alpha League play is not going to be easy.
The Vikings got off to a quick start against Windward on Tuesday night in their league opener, but quickly saw the lead disappear and could not recover in a 79-67 setback.
Wesley Saunders, a Harvard-bound forward, exerted his will underneath the basket for 33 points and 10 rebounds and junior forward Nick Stover added 15 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and four blocks for Windward.
"(Saunders) is an offensive animal," Campbell Hall's Cole Huff said. "He is so strong and you know what he is going to do but you can't stop it. They bullied us in the middle."
Campbell Hall took a 19-12 lead near the end of the first quarter but Windward finally tied the score at 25-25 midway through the second and took a 39-30 lead into halftime.
Jordan Wilson had eight points in the first quarter and Saunders scored 10 of his 15 first-half points in the second quarter.
"We had a sequence of three or four times where we made mistakes, turned the ball over and they capitalized," Huff said.
Saunders made a layup and Wilson made a 3-pointer to start the second half to put Windward ahead by 14 and it never looked back.
Huff had a monster slam dunk and Jeremy Clark made a layup to cut the deficit to 10 points early in the fourth quarter but Saunders came back with two free throws and Stover made a lay up to push the lead back to 14. Huff, who was battling a leg injury suffered last week at the Torrey Pines tournament, finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds.
Austin McBroom was Campbell Hall's leading scorer with 22 points. McBroom had five rebounds and four assists.
Campbell Hall also received an outstanding performance from Zack Klein, who finished with nine points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals.
Wilson finished with 15 points and six assists for the Wildcats, including making all four of his free throws in the fourth quarter.
"Over three quarters of the game we were right there," Campbell Hall coach Steve Wachs said. "We can't afford to make mistakes and have lapses like we did. We got out-of-sorts in the second quarter."
Things won't get much easier for Campbell Hall in the toughest small-schools league in Southern California, which includes Sierra Canyon, Montclair Prep, Brentwood and Pacific Hills.
"Next to the Mission League, I think we are the most competitive private school league in the area," Wachs said.
Varsity Boys Basketball - The host Vikings blow an early lead in a 79-67 loss in the Alpha League opener. By Sean Ceglinsky and Alan Garcia
Campbell Hall High boys' basketball team was hoping to make a rather large statement Tuesday in an Alpha League opener against visiting Windward of L.A.
And the host Vikings did make a statement -- but not the one they hoped for.
The goal was to get off to a fast start in league play, essentially gain the upper hand in the early standings. However, Campbell Hall lost 79-67,, and now the Vikings must re-access things.
All signs pointed to Campbell Hall (11-5) being successful against the Wildcats (9-5) when the Vikings opened a seven-point lead in the first quarter before things unraveled.
Campbell Hall had no answer for Wesley Saunders. The senior forward, who has verbally committed to Harvard, scored 10 points in the second quarter and finished with 33 points and 10 rebounds.
All of a sudden, the Vikings' lead disappeared, and they soon trailed by nine at halftime.
"Over three quarters of the game, we were right there," Campbell Hall coach Steve Wachs said. "We can't afford to make mistakes and have lapses like we did. We got out-of-sorts in the second quarter."
Austin McBroom, who finished with 22 points, five rebounds and four assists, did his best to keep the Vikings close in the second half.
Ultimately, Campbell Hall came up short of making its planned statement, due in large part to Saunders. He was simply too tough down the stretch. Nick Stover added 15 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and four blocks.
Campbell Hall's Cole Huff had 16 points and 14 rebounds, and teammate Zack Klein added nine points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals.
"We had a sequence of three or four times where we made mistakes, turned the ball over and they capitalized," Huff said.
Campbell Hall hopes to bounce back Friday in a league game against Pacific Hills in Los Angeles.

GIRLS' TENNIS: Katz, Thong defend doubles crown; Santamaria captures singles title.
SEAL BEACH -- Zoe Katz and Valerie Thong knew it was a career-defining opportunity.
Sabrina Santamaria believed it was the victory she needed to solidify her legacy.
And for Campbell Hall, their performances Friday added up to perhaps the most significant achievement in the school's rich athletic history.
After Katz and Thong became the area's first team to repeat as Southern Section doubles champions with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Thousand Oaks' Alison Ho and Savannah Ware, Santamaria delivered her finest performance in the last match of her high school career, rallying to defeat Woodbridge freshman Mayo Hibi 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2 in the singles final at Seal Beach Tennis Center.
The title sweep allowed Campbell Hall to join Peninsula (1992-93) as the only Southern Section girls' tennis teams to secure the triple crown of winning singles, doubles and Div. I team championships in the same year.
"It's been a dream season," Campbell Hall coach Steve Kuechel said. "It's like pitching a perfect game and how many perfect games are you going to pitch in your career? This is a once-in-a-lifetime thing. That was the best match I've seen Val and Zoe play in two seasons. And Sabrina, what else can I say? That's the stuff that legends are made of."
Santamaria was two points away from losing the match, facing a 6-5 deficit in the second. But the USC signee broke Hibi to force a tiebreaker, then scored six of the final seven points after an early service break to force the deciding set. "It really came down to a mind-over-matter mentality. I was so sore and really tired, but I knew I had to find a way to win," Santamaria said.
"This is something I've always wanted and she was two points away from winning it, but it's pretty crazy how I fought my way back. I fought my butt off and I put everything I had on the line that last set. It's that fight-on mentality that USC talks about."
After Hibi broke Santamaria to take a 2-1 lead in the third, the four-year varsity athlete responded with some of her most inspired tennis, mixing clutch passing shots with well-timed drop shots to wear down the younger challenger.
Santamaria took a 5-2 lead after a backhand passing shot, then fought off a break point in the final game, before securing the title when Hibi's forehand volley landed wide in the alley.
"I knew in my senior year it had to happen," said Santamaria, who defeated Corona del Mar's Lynda Xepoleas 6-0, 6-1 in the semifinals. "I really wanted to win, but I knew I had to make it happen and that will really paid off. It's just an incredible feeling. I'm so happy."
While Santamaria felt validation after becoming only the fourth Southern Section girls' tennis player to capture the career triple crown -- joining Palos Verdes' Stella Sampras-Webster, Miraleste's Kimberly Po-Messerli and Peninsula's Amanda Augustus -- Katz and Thong expressed relief after successfully defending their title by the same score that Santamaria and Sarah Lee won the doubles crown with in 2008.
Katz and Thong, who knocked off Dana Hills' Cassidy Spearman and Jessica Perez 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals, also atoned for Ho and Ware defeating Campbell Hall teammates Alexis Pereira and Ava Sadeghi 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 in Thursday's quarterfinals.
"We definitely won this for Alexis. We wanted to defend her (after Ware's overhead smash hurt Pereira's right wrist)," Thong said. "The last two matches we played, the teams were really good, but we played so clean. But that's the epitome of how we play, because we knew this is when the matches count."
After Ho and Ware cut the first-set deficit to 4-2, Katz and Thong found another gear, running off the final eight games to become the first team to repeat since Pacific's Carol Christian and Pat Shellhammer in 1978-79.
"I'm almost a little happier Sabrina won than us to finish it off because she deserves that," Katz said. "It shows that we did deserve to win the (Div. I) final and that we've proven ourselves to be the best. We knew we'd be here again, but to be here with Sabrina and get the triple crown, it feels amazing."
Ho and Ware, who knocked off Irvine University's Ali Dawson and Kyra Scott 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals, were the first Thousand Oaks team to reach the doubles final since Rachel Collins and Krista Smith won the title in 1987.
Katz and Thong helped Campbell Hall become the second program to win three consecutive doubles titles, following El Monte (1930-32) and Peninsula (1991-93).
"It would have taken the Bryan brothers to beat them," Thousand Oaks coach Dave Assorson said. "They could go to the Pac-10 and do some damage right now. They were so sharp, nothing fazed them."
Varsity Girls Tennis - When Campbell Hall became just the third team in Southern Section history to capture back-to-back Div. I girls' tennis championships with a 10-8 victory Nov. 22 over Dana Hills, it served as a memorable end to the program's first perfect season since 2003.
But the Vikings might not be through making history, especially with six individuals scheduled to compete today at the Southern Section round of 16 at Seal Beach Tennis Center.
Campbell Hall has already won five team championships in eight seasons under coach Steve Kuechel, in addition to capturing back-to-back doubles titles with Sarah Lee and Sabrina Santamaria in 2008, followed by Zoe Katz and Valerie Thong last year.
But should the Michigan-bound Lee or Santamaria, a USC signee, capture the singles title Friday, it would not only be the first in school history, but could put the Vikings in position to pull off a rare triple crown.
With Katz and Thong returning to defend their crown, Campbell Hall has the potential to join Peninsula as only the second Southern Section team to sweep singles, doubles and team championships in the same season in the 36 years all three titles have been presented.
In 1992, the Panthers capped perhaps the most dominant season in section history by defeating Dana Hills 18-0 in the Div. I championship, followed by Janet Lee defeating teammate Amanda Basica for the singles title, with Amanda Augustus and Jennifer Cohen outlasting Amber Basica and Summer Redondo in an all-Peninsula doubles final.
Augustus captured the singles title in 1993 by defeating Arcadia's Pam Trump, with Amber Basica and Nicole London knocking off Newport Harbor's Mara Colazzi and Sarah Hawkins for the doubles crown.
Should Lee and Santamaria be placed on opposite sides of the bracket, as well as Katz and Thong and teammates Ava Sadeghi and Alexis Pereira in the doubles draw, Campbell Hall would have an opportunity to duplicate Peninsula's exceptional 1992 feat.
"Winning the team title was our main goal, but to have an opportunity to win all three would be incredible," Kuechel said.
"The way Sabrina has been playing, you can tell how bad she wants this. But Sarah has a great chance as well, especially if she plays like she did in the finals. Plus, she beat Sabrina in the Alpha League tournament.
"Valerie and Zoe lost (in the team semifinals) last year and they didn't lose again, and this year they lost (in the team final), so they should be focused and ready to go. And before the (title) match against Dana Hills, Ava and Alexis had only lost two sets all season to Valerie and Zoe, so they're capable of getting there as well."
If Sadeghi and Pereira can capture their first title, or if Katz and Thong can become the first team to repeat since Pacific's Carol Christian and Pat Shellhammer in 1978-79, Campbell Hall would be the third program to win three consecutive doubles crowns, joining El Monte (1930-32) and Peninsula (1991-93).
Seeking successful debuts
Along with the Campbell Hall entries, four other local doubles teams and another area singles standout qualified to compete today, all making their first appearances in the round of 16.
Crescenta Valley's Sarah Ali and Karen Ataian, Harvard-Westlake's Taylor Coon and Kei Goldberg, Thousand Oaks' Savannah Ware and Alison Ho, and Valencia twins Clarice and Emily Fraczek will be joined by Westlake sophomore Sivan Krems, who has lost only three sets in her high school career.

Varsity Girls Tennis - Campbell Hall's Steve Kuechel and Saugus' Rene Paragas continue to be at their best when it matters most. erik.boal@dailynews.com
Steve Kuechel arrived at Claremont Club decked out from head to toe in white, paying homage to the wardrobe worn at Wimbledon, the most revered of tennis championships.
Rene Paragas showed up at Woodward Park adorned in Saugus blue, a color synonymous with captains preparing soldiers for battle, beginning in the 18th century with the British Royal Navy.
But one color the coaches continued to have in common was gold, as in championship plaques and medals after leading their teams to titles for the fifth time in their careers.
Although their paths might never cross, with Kuechel guiding the tennis program at Campbell Hall and Paragas the architect of a cross country dynasty at Saugus, the coaches reminded us again that just like their student-athletes, they're at their best when it matters most.
Kuechel, the only girls' tennis coach in Southern Section history to win championships in the top three divisions, began the week by improving to 5-0 in his career in finals, as Campbell Hall (18-0) capped its second unbeaten season in program history - the Vikings went 21-0 in 2003 - with a 10-8 victory Nov. 22 over Dana Hills in the Div. I title match.
Paragas concluded it by celebrating the Centurions' fifth consecutive girls' state title Saturday with a 25-62 victory over Mira Costa in the Div. II final, in addition to leading the Saugus boys to their best finish in Fresno with a runner-up performance behind five-time state champion Loyola. They both called their seasons the most rewarding of their impressive careers. They both admitted to being exhausted, losing sleep while stressing over whether their student-athletes could overcome injuries and avoid illness in time to produce again on the big stage.
Kuechel had Campbell Hall start fast, as the Vikings rolled through the program's most difficult nonleague schedule in September before reaching another peak in the playoffs. In doing so, Campbell Hall increased its winning streak to 34 consecutive matches and became only the third girls' tennis team in Div. I history to capture back-to-back titles, also joining the Harvard-Westlake boys' tennis team as the only local programs to accomplish the feat.
Paragas followed the blueprint of NCAA women's national cross country champion Villanova and men's winner Oklahoma State by taking the slow and steady approach, establishing a foundation with heavy training and less competition early in the season, allowing his runners to reap the benefits by delivering exceptional performances during postseason races.
Sure, both coaches have incredible talent on their rosters, perhaps the deepest rosters this area has ever seen. And they know it, but never take it for granted.
Campbell Hall boasts the defending Southern Section doubles champions Zoe Katz and Valerie Thong, along with USC-bound Sabrina Santamaria, Michigan signee Sarah Lee and freshman standout Alexis Pereira.
Saugus' senior class of Stephanie Bulder, Alex Hampton, Danielle Hernando, Merissa Kado, Kaylin Mahoney and Nicole Penick is the most decorated in state history, along with impressive juniors Karis Frankian, Jenay Jauregui and Emily McCarty.
But for those who believe coaching is overrated, think again. Kuechel and Paragas both made important decisions with regard to their lineups that paid significant dividends in securing championships.
With Dana Hills stacking its doubles lineup in attempt to combat the talents of Lee and Santamaria, Kuechel moved Conner Calabro into the singles rotation and the sophomore responded with a victory in the first round to give the Vikings a 4-2 lead they would never relinquish.
After resting Hampton for the Southern Section prelims Nov. 13 resulting in the senior placing 10th at the Div. II girls' final Nov. 20, Paragas made another calculated tactical decision Saturday by replacing McCarty with Jauregui, who didn't race the week before at Mount San Antonio College.
The result was Jauregui securing a 10th-place finish, capping a group of five Saugus runners earning all-state honors and producing a team time of 89minutes, 25 seconds on the 5-kilometer course, the fastest in California history.
But despite the magnitude of their accomplishments, neither coach is resting on his laurels because there is more work to be done this week.
Kuechel is preparing six individuals to compete Thursday at the Southern Section round of 16 at Seal Beach Tennis Center and Paragas is organizing workouts for his girls' team -- ranked No. 2 in the country by Harrier Magazine editor Marc Bloom -- to race Saturday against four-time national champion Fayetteville-Manlius of New York at the seventh annual Nike Cross Nationals in Portland, Ore.
Campbell Hall has the opportunity to accomplish the rare triple crown by sweeping the Southern Section team, singles and doubles championships. Saugus is attempting to become California's first cross country team -- boys or girls -- to win a national title at Portland Meadows.
Both achievements would be the crown jewel for either Kuechel and Paragas on resumes that include numerous championship rings. But regardless of the outcome, it won't be long before they begin preparing for the 2011 season.
Because during a postseason that has seen numerous outstanding coaching performances throughout the area, this past week reminded us that Kuechel and Paragas continue to remain one step ahead of their competition, but always searching for the next challenge.
Varsity Girls Tennis - Westlake sophomore Sivan Krems prevented Campbell Hall's Zoe Katz from winning the girls' 16-under singles championship at the USTA junior national level 2 Thanksgiving tournament at Costa Mesa Tennis Center. But Katz, a member of the two-time Southern Section Div. I champions, didn't leave the tournament without a title Sunday, teaming with Dos Pueblos' Lauren Stratman to capture the doubles crown with an 8-4 victory over Mariana Gould of Boise, Idaho, and Gabrielle Smith of Henderson, Nev. Krems recorded a 6-2, 6-1 semifinal victory Saturday over Katz, who suffered a 6-3, 6-3 setback to Dasha Ivanova of Beaverton, Ore., in Sunday's third-place match. Krems, who outlasted Thousand Oaks' Alison Ho 4-6, 7-6, 7-5 in Saturday's quarterfinals, fell to San Francisco's Caroline Doyle 6-3, 6-2 in Sunday's final. Katz and Stratman defeated Doyle and Campbell Hall freshman Alexis Pereira 8-5 in Saturday's quarterfinals, then knocked off Simi Valley's Kareena Manji and Ivanova 8-4 later in the day in the semifinals. Katz, Pereira, Krems and Ho will compete Thursday in the Southern Section round of 16 at Seal Beach Tennis Center. Katz and Valerie Thong will attempt to defend their doubles title in a draw that includes teammates Pereira and Ava Sadeghi, along with Thousand Oaks' Savannah Ware and Ho. Krems is in the singles draw, along with Campbell Hall's Sarah Lee and Sabrina Santamaria.

Varsity Boys Basketball - By Lee Barnathan and Randy Rosenbloom
The Vikings won 20 games last year, but after winning three state titles during the recent Jrue Holiday era, Campbell Hall has bigger ambitions.
Most prep basketball programs would call a 20-win season and a second-round playoff appearance a successful year. One day, Campbell Hall might view its 20-8 s season that ended with a loss to La Canada in such a way.
But it's still too early.
It's only Year Three AJ – After Jrue Holiday.
Memories linger, and the turnover isn't complete. Today's seniors were freshmen when Holiday completed his prep career by leading the Vikings to three state titles and winning the Gatorade National Player of the Year award. One of them, Austin McBroom, was a star freshman on that team.
So while Holiday went to UCLA and now is a Philadelphia 76er, these Vikings know where they came from – and where they want to go.
"We've got to keep up the legacy," McBroom said. "Very often, we bring him up. It's something we've got to live up to."
This is a senior-laden team under second-year coach Steve Wachs, and it begins with McBroom, who is barely 6-foot but is receiving interest for most of the Big West Conference colleges. Maybe his 22.5-point scoring average has something to do with that.
"He brings speed. He brings heart. He brings toughness. He also handles the ball well and shoots well," Wachs said. "I'm very happy to have him for another year. We love everything he does."
The other top player is junior Cole Huff, who has committed to San Diego State.
At 6-7, Huff is the tallest Viking and plays center, though Wachs said his true position is small forward.
"He's bouncier, he's more explosive, and he's more comfortable on the perimeter," Wachs said.
If Huff is not playing center, 6-5-senior Skylar Jones will, said Wachs.
Guard K.J. Smith will share point duties with McBroom. At 6-1, he's like so many of his teammates: skinny and fast. Wachs said an up-tempo offense is necessary to compensate for the lack of height. The goal is to bring the ball to the frontcourt as fast as possible, then read the defense to determine if the fast break continues or it's time for the half-court game.
Wachs said it won't be as fast as the Paul Westhead-coached Loyola Marymount teams of the late 1980s, but spectators should be watching at all times or they might miss something special.
"We want the pace of a tennis match. It should be fun for people," Wachs said.

Varsity Girls Volleyball - After dropping the first game Tuesday night in the opening round of the Div. III state playoffs, the Campbell Hall girls' volleyball team roared back for a 21-25, 25-19, 25-13, 25-19 victory at Madera South (30-9).
Senior Sydney Carfagno had 23 kills and 20 digs for Campbell Hall (21-11), which prevailed in its state opener for the second time in three years, following a first-round victory in 2008 over Exeter.
Alexa Brown added 11 digs and Juliana Tucker had 20 assists for the Vikings, who continued their momentum after capturing the Southern Section Div. III-A championship Friday.
The Vikings play at San Diego Section Div. III champion Cathedral Catholic (29-8) - which swept Southern Section Div.V-A champ Firebaugh - in Saturday's regional semifinals.
Varsity Girls Tennis - CLAREMONT - It wasn't the ideal conclusion, but Conner Calabro didn't seem to mind. Campbell Hall was already celebrating another perfect ending at the Claremont Club. Although Calabro lost her final set Monday to Dana Hills' Rebecca Winkle, she still couldn't wait to celebrate with her teammates after helping the Vikings capture back-to-back Southern Section Div. I girls' tennis championships. Behind near-flawless performances from seniors Sarah Lee and Sabrina Santamaria, top-seeded Campbell Hall grabbed an early lead and never relinquished control in a 10-8 victory over the No. 2 Dolphins, securing the second undefeated season in program history and the Vikings' fifth title in eight seasons. "I didn't care, I just wanted to be with my team," said Calabro, who nearly forgot to shake Winkle's hand following her 6-4 setback as her teammates stormed the court. "Once (coach Steve Kuechel) told me we had already won, I couldn't focus. I was just so overwhelmed." Fortunately for Campbell Hall (18-0), Calabro was plenty focused in the opening round, as her 6-2 victory over Kasey Matthess helped the Vikings secure a 4-2 advantage with a 15-game lead. "It was amazing the way she played," Santamaria said. "It was such a good move to put her in singles and she really came through." Calabro played doubles with Mayu Kuchler in the Vikings' 10-8 victory Sept. 29. But in an effort to counter Joanna Smith and Margo Pletcher's move to the doubles lineup, Kuechel put Calabro in singles, allowing her to join forces with Lee and Santamaria for seven victories. "I couldn't be more proud of the way she stepped up," Kuechel said. "We've relied so heavily on our doubles to come through for us all year, but give Dana Hills credit for how they played. But moving Conner to singles helped us win the match." Although Cassidy Spearman and Pletcher outlasted Alexis Pereira and Ava Sadeghi 7-5 in the first round, before handing Zoe Katz and Valerie Thong just their third loss in the past two seasons with a 6-3 second-round win, it wasn't enough for Dana Hills (22-2) to overcome the dominance of Lee and Santamaria. After dropping her first game to Alyssa Smith, the USC-bound Santamaria won 18 in a row, later defeating Winkle and Rebecca Gold. "I really wanted to make sure my last match here was special," said Santamaria, who won all 15 sets in her high school career at Claremont Club, including a 9-0 record in championship matches. "I definitely live for these moments. I love the competition and playing for my school. I consider myself really fortunate to play on this team. I'm so proud of how all the girls played and how well they carried themselves." Katz and Thong gave Campbell Hall - which extended its winning streak to 34 in a row - a 9-5 advantage following a 6-2 victory over Jacqueline Stewart and Jessica Wilcox, giving the Vikings three doubles victories, along with one from Pereira and Sadeghi. But during a season filled with ups and downs, it was only fitting the Michigan-bound Lee secured Campbell Hall's 10 th set with a 6-1 victory over Alyssa Smith. "I heard (my teammates) celebrating after (Valerie and Zoe) won and when I was up 2-0, I couldn't help but smile and think 'If I win this, that will be me,'" said Lee, who boasts a 14-1 career mark at Claremont Club, including 8-1 in finals. "This was my last chance to really prove myself, so I wanted to take advantage of that opportunity. It's just an amazing feeling." One that caused Kuechel to get emotional during the awards ceremony when he recognized Lee, Santamaria and Sadeghi after their third title. "They know how hard it is to win a championship and that's why I think this one meant more to all of my girls," said Kuechel, whose team joined Peninsula and Dana Hills as the only programs to repeat as Div. I champions. "We beat all the great teams. Everybody took their best shot at us and we still won it, plus we went undefeated. Dana Hills played great, but these girls showed why they're champions." Varsity Girls Volleyball - Nothin' But Net: Campbell Hall's Volleyball Team Looks to Keep Winning
By Heather Gripp
After winning a Southern Section girls' title Saturday, the Vikings will continue in the state tournament Tuesday at Madera South.
The title hunt begins anew for the Campbell Hall High girls' volleyball team when the Vikings open state regional Division III playoffs Tuesday night at Madera South of the Central Section.
Campbell Hall, seeded fifth in the eight-team Southern California regional, reached its prime goal for the season Friday when it won the Southern Section Division III-A championship with a sweep of Rim of the World. Now the Vikings look to keep the good times going without putting too much pressure on themselves.
"We're just going to take it one game at a time," Campball Hall senior middle blocker Sydney Carfango said. "We'll just push as hard as we can and have fun and see how far we go."
The Vikings (20-11), who finished second in the Alpha League, are coming off one of their best matches of the season. They thoroughly dominated fourth-seeded Rim of the World in the 25-17, 25-18, 25-16 victory that snapped the Mountain Valley League champion's winning streak at 16 matches.
Campbell Hall has won its past eight matches since being swept by league rival Brentwood on Oct. 20.
Carfango, who had 14 kills and 20 digs in Friday's final, is the clutch performer at the heart of the Vikings' attack, but she is surrounded by talent. Freshmen outside hitter Alex Cardwell and Annie Turpin have stepped up to rank among team kill leaders. Junior libero Alexa Brown anchors the defense and is coming off a 27-dig performance.
The Vikings say they've hit their stride after enduring the challenges of a league that featured three of the section's four semifinalists, they but insist they haven't thought much about playing this deep into the season.
"To me, this is the big dance," Campbell Hall coach Jess Quiroz said after his team claimed the section title. "This is what's it's all about. Anything after this is just icing on the cake."
Madera South (31-8) is the Central Section champion coming off a five-game victory over Bakersfield Independence.
The winner of Tuesday's match advances to Saturday's regional semifinal against the winner of the Cathedral Catholic-Firebaugh matchup. Southern California finals are Nov. 30 followed by state finals Dec. 4 at San Jose State. San Diego's Cathedral Catholic (28-8) is the No. 1 seed and defending state champion.
"We're just going to come out and have some fun," Quiroz said.
Varsity Girls Volleyball - By Heather Gripp
The Vikings don't get another crack at league rival Brentwood, but no one complains after a section-championship win over Rim of the World.
CYPRESS— As the Campbell Hall High girls' volleyball team dogpiled on one another and rolled around in laughter on the floor of the Cypress College gym, disappointment seemed a distant memory.
The Vikings lost out on a league title, as well as their coveted opportunity for a postseason rematch with league champion Brentwood, but none of that mattered after what Campbell Hall accomplished Friday night. The third-seeded Vikings claimed the Southern Section Division 3A championship with a dominant 25-17, 25-18, 25-16 sweep of Rim of the World.
They move on to the state playoffs beginning Tuesday.
"This is better than anything," said Campbell Hall senior Sydney Carfango, who played a significant part in the victory with a team-high 14 kills and 20 digs.
The Vikings (20-11) had figured that if they were fortunate enough to reach the final it would provide a chance for redemption against Brentwood, the team that beat them out for the Alpha League title and earned the division's No. 1 seed for the postseason.
However, No. 4 Rim of the World (25-8) defeated Brentwood in five games in Tuesday's semifinals, leaving the Vikings scrambling for a heavy dose of scouting over the next few days. By Friday they knew that containing the Scots' 6-foot senior middle Chelsea Ybanez was key, and they'd spent two days of practices working on serving.
The preparation paid off as Campbell Hall took control early, often holding double-figure leads.
"We did a good job scouting," Vikings coach Jess Quiroz said. "We knew exactly what to expect and were able to make adjustments."
Another key was the solid play of a pair of freshmen outside hitters. Alex Cardwell ranked second on the team with nine kills, and Annie Turpin added seven kills. "They really stepped up," Quiroz said.
Juliana Tucker and Whitney Browne shared setting duties and finished with 15 and 14 assists respectively. Libero Alexa Brown contributed 27 digs.
"It's just everything has finally come together," Carfango said. "We worked so hard to get here. It's unreal, basically."
The third game was the only one in which Rim of the World was even briefly close. The Scots closed to within one at 6-5 on a Campbell Hall hitting error, but the Vikings responded with nine consecutive points and led by at least seven the rest of the way. A final hitting error by Rim of the World clinched the win and set off the celebration on the court.
"We didn't feel any pressure," Quiroz said. "We were loose. I told them, 'Come out and have some fun.' "
Varsity Girls Volleyball - Campbell Hall girls' volleyball defeats World, wins Div. III-A championship
By Josh Jovanelly Special to the Daily News
CYPRESS - In the biggest match of its season, Campbell Hall left no doubt.
The third-seeded Vikings dominated Rim of the World 25-17, 25-28, 25-16, emphatically claiming the Southern Section Div. III-A girls' volleyball championship Friday night at Cypress College.
With a two-game lead, the Vikings (20-11) went on a nine-point run in the third to open up a 15-5 advantage. They coasted to the title from there, holding off a final push by the Fighting Scots.
The first two games followed a similar theme. Campbell Hall sparked early scoring runs that proved too much for Rim of the World to overcome, opening leads of 11-6 and 18-6 in games one and two, respectively.
Middle blocker Sydney Carfagno led the way for Campbell hall with 14 kills and 20 digs.
"Everything finally came together and we worked so hard to get here," Carfagno said. "It's unreal basically."
It seemed every time the Fighting Scots were poised to make a run, Carfagno made a play in response.
"That's our go-to girl," Campbell Hall coach Jess Quiroz said.
Complementing Carfagno's dominating presence in the middle were freshman outside hitters Alex Cardwell and Annie Turpin. Cardwell had nine kills and Turpin added seven.
Alexa Brown led the Vikings with 14 assists and 27 digs and Juliana Tucker contributed 15 assists.
Quiroz, who led Harvard-Westlake to five Southern Section championships during his tenure, said his team did not shy away from the big stage after losing to Brentwood in the Div. III-AA final in 2008. "We didn't feel any pressure at all. We were loose," he said. "And I told them, `Just come out and have some fun."'
Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots (25-7), who entered with a 16-match winning streak, couldn't limit their service and hitting errors.
"We're just very young," Rim of the World coach Linda Pattison said. "We're very inexperienced, we just didn't play."
The Vikings will now look to make a statement in the state playoffs. Quiroz, though, said his team's championship victory already spoke loud enough.
"To me, this is the big dance," Quiroz said. "This is what's it's all about, the Southern Section. Anything after this is just icing on the cake."

Although they arrive at today's Southern Section girls' tennis finals as No. 1 seeds in their respective divisions, Buckley and Campbell Hall are motivated by the power of three.
For Campbell Hall (17-0), which became the first girls' tennis team in Southern Section history to win titles in the top three divisions with last year's 10-8 victory over Dana Hills, it is looking to become just the third program to capture back-to-back Div. I crowns.
The Vikings bring a 33-match win streak into their showdown with No. 2 Dana Hills (22-1) at 10:30 a.m. at the Claremont Club. Seniors Sarah Lee, Ava Sadeghi and Sabrina Santamaria are seeking a third career championship at Campbell Hall, including a Div. II title in 2007 against Beverly Hills.
"I'm really looking forward to it," Santamaria said. "I love the competition, especially at this level. This is what the whole season is all about, playing for a championship."
Peninsula and Dana Hills are the only programs to repeat as Div. I girls' champions in the past 18 years.
Calabasas won Div. I girls' titles in 2002 and `04, but the Harvard-Westlake boys (2004-05) are the only locals to capture back-to-back Div. I crowns.
"These girls are so focused. They want this so bad," said Campbell Hall coach Steve Kuechel, who has captured four division titles in the past seven years, including an unbeaten run to the Div. III championship in 2003.
"You can just tell in the way they practice and the way they've carried themselves throughout the playoffs, they don't want to lose." For Buckley (16-1), making a third consecutive appearance in a title match, the Div. IV final at 1:30 p.m. against No. 2 Santa Ynez (20-5) is an opportunity to make its own history.
Led by finals veterans Hadleigh Glist, Ali Guthy and Natasha Super, the Griffins are seeking the first girls' championship in any sport in the school's 77-year history.
"We've stood and watched the (awards) ceremony two years in a row in second place and that's really motivated these girls," Buckley coach Sue Sherman said. "We've always been the bridesmaid, first to Viewpoint (in the Liberty League) and then in CIF. My message to the girls all year has been if you want it bad enough, then go get it."
Varsity Football - Campbell Hall High's football team is all too familiar with its opening opponent Friday in the East Valley Division playoffs.
The Vikings play at St. Margaret's in San Juan Capistrano, a team that bounced Campbell Hall (7-3) from the playoffs two years and met the Vikings again in a scrimmage this past August.
"Yeah, we know what we're up against,'' Campbell Hall coach Russell Gordon said. "We have a lot of film on St. Margaret's, that's for sure, and it could end up working to our advantage. At least that's the hope around here.''
After scrimmage St. Margaret's, Campbell Hall defeated Antelope Valley 26-3 in the season opener, so the Vikings were well-prepared thanks to the Tartans (7-3).
Campbell Hall fed off the momentum, and accordingly, won its next three games. Oddly enough, a three-game losing streak followed. The Vikings did, however, rally to finish the regular season play with three consecutive victories.
The Tartans seemed to benefit, too, from the test the Vikings provided during the summer. As a result, St. Margaret's played well during the regular season in winning the Academy League championship—without coach Harry Welch, the former Canyon coach who won three titles at St. Margaret's before moving on to Santa Margarita.
"Make no mistake, St. Margaret's is a good team, they always have been, always will be,'' Gordon said. "We're still confident we can come in and get the job done. We know what to expect. There won't be many surprises.''
In 2008, Campbell Hall played the Tartans twice and lost both encounters. The first time around, St. Margaret's won with relative ease, 37-0. A month later things didn't get much better in 58-14 loss in the playoffs.
In order to reverse the losing trend and come away with a victory, the Vikings will need its offense to play well. Quarterback R.J. Gordon must be at his best. The same can be said for multipurpose backs Blake Brady and Louis Collins. And Campbell Hall will need major contributions from receiver/return specialist Austin McBroom.
Defensively, it figures to be a collective effort with defensive end Dustin Drai leading the charge. In the secondary, Ricky Lawson, who has four interceptions, could prove to be the difference.
"We think we can compete with St. Margaret's. We've done it in the past, now it's time for us to get over the hump and win a game,'' Gordon said. "All the stuff that happened before doesn't matter. It's the playoffs, and we're all starting from scratch. The stakes are high—it's win or go home.
"We're a confident group, not overconfident though. We can't wait to get out on the field and show St. Margaret's, and everyone else in our division, what we can do. We feel good about our chances in the playoffs.''

Varsity Girls Tennis - For all the significant victories Campbell Hall seniors Sarah Lee, Ava Sadeghi and Sabrina Santamaria have recorded during their four-year careers, the final act Thursday at Valley College might have been the most impressive.
Not only did they contribute to a 14-4 victory over No. 4 Corona del Mar in the Southern Section Div. I semifinals, but in doing so, sent a message to No. 2 Dana Hills (22-1) that it's going to take a special effort Monday at the Claremont Club to dethrone the top-seeded Vikings.
"I'm so proud of these girls. They came out here and took care of business and we supported each other every set," Santamaria said. "This group is so strong-willed. I've never had so many teammates who are so focused and have such an incredible will to win."
Dana Hills, which defeated No. 3 University 9-8 in a semifinal match halted by darkness, defeated Campbell Hall last year in the regular season before losing 10-8 in the final.
The Vikings (17-0), who extended their winning streak to 33 in a row Thursday, rallied from an early deficit Sept. 29 at Dana Hills to prevail 10-8.
But Campbell Hall has found another level since, especially in doubles, with Zoe Katz and Valerie Thong - the defending Southern Section champions - remaining unbeaten in the postseason by sweeping 6-0, 6-1, 6-1, the first two games they've allowed in the playoffs.
"Playing for pride is our biggest motivation. The last thing you want to do is to go to (your teammates) and tell them that you lost that game or you lost that set, so I want to win it for them," Katz said. "I don't know what it is with this group, but losing is just not an option for us. We feel like that's the only way we can do it (is going undefeated)."
Sadeghi and Conner Calabro recorded three 6-2 victories to sweep for the second consecutive match. Priya Amritraj and Mayu Kuchler were edged 7-6 (3) by Karina Purcifull and Piper Bledsoe in the final set.
"To get (to the Div. I final) two years in a row is kind of amazing. I know how good everyone on this team is and we know our potential, but it's still pretty incredible," Sadeghi said. "I've been with this team four years and I'm sad that I'm leaving because every single one of my teammates is so good and they all want to win equally as bad."
Corona del Mar (16-6) trailed 4-2 after the first round when Purdue-bound Lynda Xepoleas defeated Michigan signee Sarah Lee 6-2. But the Vikings won five of six sets in each of the final two rounds, led by the USC-bound Santamaria sweeping 6-3, 6-0, 6-0 and freshman Alexis Pereira prevailing 6-0, 6-1, 6-2 to go along with two victories from Lee.
"We had the best practice we've ever had (Wednesday) and I knew we were going to come out and play well, but I never would have thought about this (outcome)," Vikings coach Steve Kuechel said. "Our girls are so focused right now."

Varsity Girls Volleyball - Campbell Hall def. Windward 15-25, 25-17,24-26, 25-20, 15-10 – Campbell Hall came from one set down, as the Vikings improved to 10-9 overall, 5-1 in league.
Campbell Hall fell behind early by eight points in the first game and could not recover to fall behind.
"We came out real flat tonight," coach Jesse Quiroz said. "We were not in rhythm on any level, and it was very frustrating. We are a much better team than what we showed tonight. Although we won the match, this was not one of our best outings." October 20, 2010 By Rod Myers
Campbell Hall, dressed in pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, came back strong in the second set to even the match, but then Windward won the next set to put the Vikings down 2-1.
"We definitely did not play our best game tonight by any means," Campbell Hall's Alexa Brown said. "We seemed off key all night. After we lost the third set to fall behind 2-1, coach told us to settle down and play our game. We did just that and it was nice to pull out the win."
Brown finished with 24 digs, and Whitney Brown had 26 assists.
Sydney Carfagno (23 kills) and Alex Cartwell (10 kills) stepped up their defense in the fourth and fifth sets to help the Lady Vikings close the door.
"I am not quite sure what happened with us tonight, we seemed a little nervous," Sydney Carfagno said. "We were not placing our hits to well in that first set, it was like we could not find the inbound line to score a point. They came out ready to play and we were not prepared. We had to play one of our hardest matches tonight."

Vikings are coming off CIF championship, and this year they might be even better. By Jack Pollon
Campbell Hall High is mostly been known for its outstanding boys' basketball program and NBA star Jrue Holiday. Now, there is a new team on camous making a huge splash -- the girls' tennis team. Led by singles players Sabrina Santamaria and Sarah Lee, Campbell Hall is one of the best teams in Southern California. The team is so solid that even opposing coaches are heaping praise. Santa Barbara coach Steve Geremia said, "Every five or six years comes along a super team, and this year Campbell Hall is it." The defending Div. I champions have already knocked off Santa Barbara, Irvine University and Corona Del Mar, three of the top contenders in the division. The next big test comes this week in a nonleague match at Dana Hills in Dana Point. "We just have to take it one match at a time," Campbell Hall coach Steve Kuechel said. "We have to respect everybody. Anybody can beat you on any given day." In addition to Santamaria and Lee, freshman Alexis Pereira hasn't lost a set this year, and the No. 1 doubles team of Zoe Katz and Valerie Thong is unbeaten as well. "We really have a chance to do well," Kuechel said. "We just have to stay consistent and get better each day." In a 14-4 victory against Corona Del Mar, Santamaria didn't even drop a game in sweeping all 18 games she played. Lee and Pereira swept their sets, and the No. 2 doubles team of Ava Sadeghi and Conor Calabro only lost to Corona Del Mar's No. 1 team. "It is crazy because we were supposed to be a year away last year and ended up winning the whole thing," Kuechel said. "Now we are in the midst of a special run possibly." It isn't just talent that keeps Campbell Hall winning match after match, it is also the special chemistry and camraderie amongst the girls. "The only pressure we have is not wanting to let the other girls down," Katz said. "We are always there to pick each other up." Talented players, plenty of them, a desire to win and a desire to come through for each other. "It is a very special group," Kuechel said. "We just have to stay hungry and humble."
Varsity Football - Don't kick the football to Austin McBroom, or you might be sorry.
There's no one more dangerous in the opener field than the Campbell Hall speedster, a lesson host Montclair Prep of Van Nuys learned the hard way Friday at Pierce College, as McBroom scored on kick returns of 82 and 89 yards in a 31-22 Campbell Hall victory that should help the Vikings' playoff cause.
McBroom, a senior, has nine career kick returns for touchdowns, six last year and three this season.
"I wouldn't kick to him. There's no way," Campbell Hall coach Russ Gordon said. "I think that's a big risk. He's healthy again, and he can cause some teams some problems."
The win all but sewed up a playoff spot for the fourth-place Vikings (7-3), who've been battled tested in the tough Alpha League that includes state small-school powers Paraclete of Lancaster and Sierra Canyon of Chatsworth.
"Our playoffs started tonight. The Alpha league is the toughest in the division, and I am very proud of the way our team is playing," Gordon said.
Added McBroom: "It was our biggest game of the year. Our team is working very hard and heading into the playoffs in good shape."

The Vikings celebrate homecoming with a 70-44 win at Birmingham High to keep their playoff hopes alive
It was homecoming night Saturday for an Alpha League football game between Kilpatrick and host Campbell Hall, and everyone got their money's worth, as the teams combined for 14 touchdowns, as Campbell Hall prevailed 70-44 at Birmingham High in an important Alpha League win that kept the Vikings' playoff hopes alive.
"With a score like 70-44, I thought it was a basketball game going on," said Campbell Hall's Austin McBroom, also a top hoops player. "There were some athletes out there."
McBroom scored four touchdowns in the first half and finished with 123 yards on seven carries and three receptions for 84 yards.
It was wild from the start, as the teams combined for 50 points in the first quarter.
Yes, the whole thing was a lot of fun to watch, but Campbell Hall coach Russell Gordon was not thrilled about giving up 44 points to such a lightly regarded opponent, as Kilpatrick fell to 3-6.
"We have got to do something with our defense," Gordon said. "Obviously, we can't play like that."
Here's how the game started out:
-- Blade Brady rushed for a 4-yard touchdown
-- Kilpatrick answered with Ronnie Vaughn scoring on a 49-yard run.
-- McBroom rushed for a 34-yard touchdown.
-- Kilpatrick Maurice Gipson countered with a 74-yard touchdown run.
-- Brady scored on a 13-yard run.
-- Gipson did him better with a 43-yard touchdown.
-- McBroom caught a 14-yard touchdowns pass from R.J. Gordon.
That was just the first quarter.
Gordon completed 10 of 19 passes for 213 yards, and Kilpatrick's Vaughn rushed for 164 yards on 15 carries and Gipson had 119 yards on three carries.

Varsity Girls Tennis - The Campbell Hall girls' tennis star defeats her own teammate for Delphic League championship. By Heather Gripp
The Alpha League girls' tennis finals gave Campbell Hall a chance to see how opponents usually feel. Thursday's event at Brentwood High also provided a good chance for the Vikings to show off the depth that has them favored to repeat as Southern Section Division I champions.
In finals filled with all Campbell Hall players, senior Sarah Lee repeated as singles champion with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Sabrina Santamaria, while Valerie Thong and Zoe Katz claimed the doubles title with a 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 win against Alexis Pereira and Ava Sadeghi.
Pereira, a freshman who spent most of the season playing singles, teamed with Sadeghi to become the first pair this season to win a set against Thong and Katz, the defending division doubles champions.
"I'm glad they're on our team," Katz said. "They're so good. That was the hardest match we've played all year."
The match went down to the wire as Pereira and Sadeghi rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the final set. They survived three match points before forcing a 5-5 tie.
"They were tough," Thong said. "We're used to playing kids we could just practice against, but they're a much tougher team. It was a great match." The players said the match was the ideal tuneup for playoffs, which begin next week.
"If we went in like we were playing before, it wouldn't have been good," Katz said. "This is a wake-up. It's good we faced a tough team like that."
The singles final was also one of the biggest challenges of the season for the Michigan-bound Lee, who has lost just one set this season. Lee defeated Santamaria in last year's league final, but the USC-bound Santamaria beat Lee at a tournament in March.
"This was the first time I'd played her since that," Lee said. "It's nice to redeem myself. It's always close with her, you never know who's going to win."
Santamaria took an early lead in the first set before Lee pulled ahead for good at 3-2. "It was a lot of pressure," Lee said. "I was really nervous starting off. I tried not to show it too much, but it probably did affect me a little.
"It's different playing against her. We've been fiends since we were 3 and played against each other forever. . . .It's nice to have my teammate on the other side and know that we have a chance to represent our team well. Campbell Hall was going to have a champion no matter what, so that's nice."
Lee hopes to carry her momentum into the postseason, where she'll be trying to help the undefeated, top-ranked Vikings repeat as Division I team champion as well as attempting to better last year's showing in the individual tournament in which she was eliminated in the quarterfinals. Campbell Hall coach Steve Kuechel said that shouldn't be difficult.
"This was the best she's played all season," he said.
The Vikings also had a reprsenative in the third-place singles match, where Conner Calabro lost to Maya Parker of CAMS, 6-2, 6-1.
JV Girls Volleyball - Campbell Hall played spoiler and won in 3 games against former 1st place team, Windward. In the season finale, Lady Vikings came out on fire with dynamic serves and kills to take down a tough Windward team at their home court. The JV team finished the week with back to back wins in 2 days.
JV Girls Volleyball - Greatest Comeback of the Century! Girls' JV Volleyball lost the first game and were down 10 points in the 2nd game before the team woke up and sparked by Natalie Furman coming off the bench. Middle Blocker, Natalie Furman just got activated off the disabled list after a 2 months long injury layoff. In her first match back, she led the team in blocks and kills and killing percentage. Katherine Rooney and Betsy Smith supported with great serves and digs. Campbell Hall won the 2nd game and 3rd game to win the match. Campbell Hall fans went wild and were jumping out of the bleachers to celebrate the greatest comeback in JV history.
Varsity Girls Tennis - Alpha League tournament: Campbell Hall placed six athletes in Thursday's final at Brentwood High, with Sabrina Santamaria defeating teammate Conner Calabro in one semifinal and Sarah Lee knocking off CAMS' Maya Parker in the other.
Valerie Thong and Zoe Katz will face Alexis Pereira and Ava Sadeghi in an all-Vikings doubles final.
Varsity Football - Campbell Hall's Football Team Scares up a Strong Win Campbell Hall High snapped a three-game losing skid and kept its playoff hopes alive Saturday with a 48-7 football victory over visiting Marshall of Pasadena, as Austin McBroom scored four touchdowns.
McBroom scored on passes of 67 and 46 yards from R.J. Gordon, a 47-yard punt return and a 4-yard run.
"It was about time I did something special out here," McBroom said. "I felt really good today. This was one of the first times all season the other team didn't focus on me and they played a lot of single coverage."
Gordon completed 8 of 16 passes for 167 yards with two interceptions. Blade Brady gained 128 yards on 20 carries, including an 8-yard touchdown.
"All-around we did pretty well," Campbell Hall coach Russell Gordon said. "We needed to get a win real bad."
Leading 28-7 at halftime, Campbell Hall put the game away on McBroom's punt return and Blake's 23-yard touchdown on an interception return.
"I am glad we took them out right there, or it would have been frustrating," coach Russell Gordon said. "We were definitely a little rusty because most of our kids were on a school trip this week but we found a way to get back and focus."
The Vikings turn their attention to a homecoming game with Kilpatrick of Malibu next week followed by a huge game Nov. 12 against Montclair Prep of Van Nuys on Nov. 12 at Pierce College that could determine which team goes to the playoffs.
"We just want a chance to get in there and make some noise," McBroom said. "Our league is real good so we feel well prepared to do well."

Campbell Hall High lost its third football game in a row Friday with a 37-12 loss to Sierra Canyon at Granada Hills High, as a season that started with so much promise is fading fast.
The Vikings fell to 4-3, 1-3 in the Alpha League, as they could not overcome a big performance by Sierra Canyon's Julian Brooks.
Brooks had three touchdowns, scoring on a 99-yard interception return and receptions of 12 and 97 yards.
"Julian Brooks had the game of a lifetime," Sierra Canyon coach Jon Ellinghhouse said. "He did a phenomenal job for us on offense and defense and showed a lot of passion the entire game."
Brooks did pull off one strange move. He celebrated his first touchdown by running up to Campbell Hall coach Russell Gordon and handing him the football, infuriating the Vikings on the sideline.
"I made a mistake. Coach Gordon and I are really good friends off the field and I did not mean to show any disrespect to him," Brooks said. "It was just a poor decision on my part."
Ellinghouse was not thrilled.
"That is not something we condone, and I apologize to Campbell Hall and their fans for that," Ellinghouse said. "We do not want our program to be represented by any actions like that. He simply used bad judgment."
The Campbell Hall coach shook it off.
"He's a great kid and we do have a relationship off the field. I took it as a sign of playful banter between us and I am not upset," Gordon said. "I see it as nothing more than that."
And while Sierra Canyon, ranked No. 1 in the East Valley Division, extended its undefeated record to 7-0, 4-0, it was not a perfect night of football.
"I thought it was a sloppy game on our part," Ellinghouse said. "We were lucky to get them off the field with a couple of key fourth down plays."
Sierra Canyon intercepted three R.J. Gordon passes, returning two of them for touchdowns. Sierra Canyon also added a safety on a bad snap of a punt on Campbell Hall's second possession.
Brooks had two catches for 109 yards and two touchdowns. Besides his 99-yard interception return, he returned another end zone interception 65 yards.
"I could not have played this well without the complete effort of my team, we really came together and knew Campbell Hall would be tough," Brooks said. "I knew I played well tonight, and I am just happy we got the win."
Sierra Canyon's Caleb Nickels scored on as 48-yard interception return.
"I was in the right spot at the right time," Nickels said. "We picked up on a few of R.J.'s reads, and Coach told us to step it up. I had seen them run that pattern earlier and I just reacted off the ball."
Campbell Hall (4-3, 1-3) pulled to within 9-6 on Dustin Drai's 5-yard touchdown reception, but Brooks responded with his long interception return for a touchdown, and the Vikings never threatened again.
Gordon completed 24 of 49 passes for 236 yards with one touchdown, and Drai caught eight passes for 81 yards and a touchdown, and also had two sacks. John Ross added five catches for 65 yards.

Varsity Girls Volleyball - The Vikings lose in straight sets but could eventually see their Alpha League rivals again in the playoffs. By Jack Pollon
The Campbell Hall girls' volleyball team had a chance to move into a tie for first place with Brentwood in the Alpha League Wednesday.
It didn't happen.
The Vikings were thoroughly outplayed by the visting Eagles in a 25-11, 25-21, 25-13 setback.
The loss not only dropped Campbell Hall into a second-place tie with Windward but gave Brentwood a comfortable two-game cushion heading into the final few weeks.
"They are on fire," Campbell Hall coach Jess Quiroz said. "Their passing was really good, and they were rarely out of the system they run.
The Vikings knew the match would be tough against the top-ranked team in Div. III-A, but it was that much tougher after Campbell Hall had to go five games a night earlier in an emotional victory against Windward. Campbell Hall simply ran out of gas.
"Too many highs and lows these last two days," Quiroz said. "We have to be on our game to make an impact." Brentwood's Virginia James and Nathalie Simon had eight kills each, while Jocelyn Castor had seven kills and Jackie Bowman six. Monica Perales and Simon each had 13 digs for the Eagles (12-8, 6-0). Campbell Hall received 10 kills, 16 digs and four blocks from Sydney Carfagno, and nine kills and 16 digs from Alex Cardwell. Alexa Brown had 16 digs and Juliana Tucker had 11 assists for the Vikings. Campbell Hall is ranked No. 4 in the division and might see Brentwood again in the playoffs.
"I think it can happen," Quiroz said. "Our attack is not quite as strong as last year, and we really rely on going to Carfagno." Campbell Hall reached the finals a year ago, and a return trip is not out of the question, as the Alpha League is the strongest in the division.

The Campbell Hall girls' volleyball team tried to parlay its momentum gained in a five-game victory Tuesday, but could not replicate its magic in a 25-11, 25-21, 25-16 setback Wednesday to Alpha League leader Brentwood.
The Vikings (10-10, 5-2) seemed physically and emotionally drained after defeating Windward on Tuesday to set up a first-place showdown with the Eagles (12-8, 6-0), the top-ranked team in Southern Section Div. III-A.
"The highs and lows were a lot to overcome, but Brentwood is on fire right now," Campbell Hall coach Jess Quiroz said.
After taking the first two games there would be no letdown as the Eagles stormed to a 10-3 lead and never looked back.
"We are just smarter than we had been," Brentwood coach Jeff Porter said. "Especially on offense, we are attacking well and we have made a huge defensive turnaround. We are filling spaces that we use to let balls fall in."
Quiroz echoed Porter's sentiments.
"Their passing was great. They are always in system," he said.
Virginia James and Nathalie Simon each had eight kills, Jocelyn Caster had seven kills and Jackie Bowman had six kills to lead Brentwood.
Monica Perales and Simon each had 13 digs.
"We are in a good spot, moving in the right direction," Porter said. "I thought it was going to go down to the wire but we are happy with where we are at."
Campbell Hall was led by Sydney Carfagno's 10 kills, 16 digs and four blocks, one night after recording 23 kills against Windward. Alex Cardwell had nine kills and 17 digs, Alexa Brown had 17 digs and Juliana Tucker had 11 assists for the Vikings.
"We had to really be on our game to make an impact," Quiroz said. "We rely on Carfagno to get the job done. We push the ball to her."
Fourth-ranked Campbell Hall is still very much in line for a deep playoff run.
"I think it can happen," Quiroz said.
Varsity Girls Tennis - Campbell Hall notes: The girls' tennis team is still undefeated. By Heather Gripp
For the Southern Section's top-ranked girls' tennis team, practices have been more challenging than most matches this season. That's why Campbell Hall, ranked No. 1 in Division 1, didn't seem to mind when two of its recent matches were forfeited by opponents who didn't show up.
The latest forfeit occurred Monday when Archer of L.A. opted not to face the Vikings, who took advantage of the opportunity to play amongst themselves before losing another practice to rain on Tuesday.
"We had a good practice on Monday," Campbell Hall coach Steve Kuechel said. "The other team didn't show up. It actually worked out better. We had everyone there and were able to practice for about an hour and a half. We haven't practiced like that in a long time because of the rain."
The Vikings (12-0) are looking forward to one of their biggest matches of the regular season Thursday when they play at No. 4 Peninsula in a nonleague contest.
Varsity Girls Volleyball - Campbell Hall 3, Windward 2: The host Vikings rallied from a 2-1 deficit for a 15-25, 25-17, 24-26, 25-20, 15-10 Alpha League victory. Sydney Carfagno had 23 kills and Alex Cartwell added 10 kills for Campbell Hall (10-9, 5-1). Alex Brown recorded 24 digs and Whitney Browne finished with 26 assists for the Vikings.
JV Girls Volleyball - JV Girls' Volleyball Team earned a key win at Santa Monica City College. Lady Vikings faced off against Archer in tightly contested match. Campbell Hall won the first game and the third game to win the match. JV record is now at an all time high with 4-1 in league.
Varsity Football - After four wins to start the season, Vikes fall to 4-2 and have another difficult test coming next Friday against high-powered Sierra Canyon. By Jack Pollon
Campbell Hall was riding high with four decisive victories to start the season, but now the Vikings have lost two Alpha League games in a row after falling 23-14 to visiting Brentwood on Friday afternoon.
The Vikings (4-2, 1-2) are less concerned about perhaps getting to the East Valley Division final -- their original goal -- than just making the playoffs, as Brentwood (6-0, 3-0) held Campbell Hall's high-powered offensive attack scoreless until the final seven minutes.
"The loss last week (at Paraclete) really got us down, and we didn't have a great week of practice," receiver Austin McBroom said. "Brentwood is a good team. They aren't undefeated by accident. They play good defense."
Campbell Hall's R.J. Gordon, who was at best in the late going after switching to a no-huddle, completed 20 of 33 passes for 167 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown to Josh Ross and a 4-yarder to Ryan Leff.
Gordon was also intercepted, lost a fumble in the end zone, and was tagged for intentional grounding in the end zone that resulted in a safety.
Brentwood's Nick Aull completed 8 of 19 for 112 yards, connecting with sophomore Garrett Swanky on a 32-yard touchdown. Greg Oliva had five receptions for 80 yards, and sophomore Jared Ashkar rushed for 71 yards on 10 carries.
McBroom had seven recptions for 58 yards for Campbell Hall, and Ricky Lawson had two interceptions.
It does not get any easier for Campbell Hall, as the Vikings face host Sierra Canyon (6-0) on Friday at Granada Hills High.
