Visual Arts
Mission Statement
The Visual Arts Department at Campbell Hall creates and maintains a secure and supportive environment for students’ individual expression, while cultivating and advancing an understanding of the role that visual arts play within society.
The program consists of a sequence of courses that readies students for self-motivated inquiry, intellectual engagement, intuitive problem solving and creative risk-taking. Along with learning many studio techniques and skills, students develop the confidence and maturity that come with ownership of personal expression. Student learning is appreciated within appropriate contexts for exhibitions, performances, and non-traditional presentation. Class critiques teach students to critically evaluate their own work, and that of their peers.
Students are encouraged to look inside themselves and solve problems that have more than one solution. Abstract thinking and learning modalities are inherently addressed within the creative process. In addition to aesthetic assessment and valuing, there is substantial range and depth given to the relationship of visual arts to history and culture. The curriculum instills a lifelong appreciation of an essential visual literacy that is vital to understanding the complexities of the human condition.
