Service Learning
Elementary
Helping others is important in the education responsible, caring, and compassionate citizens, and to that end, Campbell Hall supports many different opportunities for students to serve and learn about their community. The outreach projects sponsored through the chapel program, as well as those initiated by the student council, create an expectation that students will serve the world around them.
Elementary student aides assist in the classroom, in the office, in chapel, and in the primary grades. In addition, participation in the Outreach Gift Fair (integrated with the curriculum) during November not only teaches children about the needs of people around the world, but also provides children with ways to help. Campbell Hall has been recognized by the Council for Religion in Independent Schools for the outstanding opportunities for service provided through the Outreach Gift Fair.
Involvement during the elementary years in helping others forms a foundation for commitment to community service in the secondary school where students fulfill a community service requirement for graduation.
Secondary
The Campbell Hall Service Learning program reflects our commitment to prepare secondary students to be active and responsible adults through thoughtful service to society and to an environment with diverse and changing needs. The school seeks to develop the understanding, by each student, of what it means to give oneself in service to others. The volunteer opportunities the school encourages involve the student in direct contact with people in need and discourages students from volunteering primarily in clerical or custodial work. Though the school values and encourages young people to help family members in need, we strongly urge our students to obtain their volunteer credits outside the family.
High School Program
Community service projects are available both off and on campus. Opportunities are coordinated by the high school faculty and administration.
Junior High School Program
The seventh and eighth grades have specific service themes. The seventh grade focuses on the environment, and an effort is made to connect their activities to the classroom curriculum as well as to provide opportunities for service in the community. The seventh grade spends one day with the UCLA Ocean Discovery Center exploring the complexities of the Santa Monica Bay and then performing a beach cleanup and audit. In addition, one trip is planned to one of several Head Start sites.
