Mathematics

The Singapore Mathematics series is used in grades K-5 as the primary text and provides the math foundation for our students. Emphasis is on the mastery of 10 new topics per year including mental math, word problems, pictorial solutions, word problems and knowledge of the basic math facts. The Harcourt Mathematics Series is used as the basic text in grade 6. Features of this program include: basic skills, problem solving, sharing ideas through discussion, daily routines, establishing links between past experiences and explorations of new concepts, cooperative learning through partner and small-group activities, practice through games, ongoing review throughout the year, informal class work assignment, and home and school partnership.
Content strands for all grades are based on the strands created by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and include:

  • Numbers, Numerations, and Order Relations;
  • Coordinate Systems and other Reference Games;
  • Geometry and Spatial Sense;
  • Algebra and Uses of Variables;
  • Measures and Measurement;
  • Exploring Data;
  • Functions, Patterns and Sequences;
  • Problem Solving and Mathematical Modeling; and
  • Operations, Number Facts and Number Systems.

It is important for students to have experience with numbers of various kinds and sizes. Common sense, intuitive understanding of basic ideas and what is reasonable for problem solving are also basic within all the content strands.
