Elementary Core Curriculum

Athletics

Students in grades 4-6 are invited to join our interscholastic athletic programs:

  • Boys

  • - Flag Football, Basketball, Soccer, and Baseball
  • Girls - Basketball, Soccer, and Volleyball

Art

Studio art, art appreciation and drawing engender excitement about visual communication and the creative process. Drawing is taught as a specific skill which enhances observation and visual record keeping.

Computer

Elementary students develop information literacy skills that focus on research, analysis, and communication. Using this framework, students develop keyboarding proficiency, word-processing skills, desktop publishing techniques, Internet savvy, and presentation techniques. Students engage in increasingly more challenging activities as they move from the primary to the intermediate grades. These skills and techniques, incorporated into the curriculum on a daily basis via class activities and projects, develop a strong foundation for living and working in an information-based society.

Human Development

Grades 4-6 are provided with an introduction to Human Development to foster self-knowledge, self-respect and respect for others.

Humanities

The elementary humanities curriculum uses a phonics-based reading program (K-4) which expands to include the reading of several different genres (poetry, short story, novel, etc.). The writing program includes creative, expository and research writing skills, as well as grammar and vocabulary. Various broad historic topics, including the study of geography are part of the humanities curriculum: Famous American (2nd grade); Native Americans, cities and Los Angeles (3rd grade); California (4th grade); Colonial America and the formation of government (5th grade); and Ancient Civilizations (6th grade).

Mathematics

Following the National Math Standards, broad topics covered in-depth each year include the study of numeration, operations and relations, geometry, ratio and proportion, data and problem solving.

Music

The sequential music curriculum focuses on music fundamentals reinforced with singing, body movement, Yamaha MIE-@XG keyboards, guitars, songflutes and recorders, Orff instruments, and a myriad of percussion instruments. Our Yamaha Music in Education Keyboard Lab offers keyboarding to every child. Courses for grades 3-6 are also an integral part of our intergrated curriculum.

Elementary strings (grades 1-6) and elementary brass and woodwinds (grades 4-6) are elective programs available to students after school.

Science

Topics are selected each trimester for in-depth study with weekly hands-on science labs.

The elementary science curriculum includes life, physical and earth sciences.

Spanish

Beginning in the 3rd grade, an introduction to the language and cultures of Spanish-speaking people is taught.
