Preface

As an Episcopal school, Campbell Hall has always had the opportunity and the responsibility, given its mission, to consider issues of the spirit as well as the mind and body. That opportunity and responsibility remained apparent as the school transitioned from one headmaster to another and undertook, beginning with the 2004-2005 academic year, an intensive and inclusive process to update the strategic plan to guide its next ten years of growth. As the process unfolded, the traditional themes of faith and reason remained as equals in the committee's deliberations. In board discussions, parent focus groups, student reactions, and faculty conversations, the topics of the curriculum of the heart and the curriculum of the mind are equally present, along with the practical topics of curriculum and operations and financial planning. The result is a dynamic plan in which the two principal themes of the school's historic mission remain as the first two goals. From the strategic planning process the statement that "Campbell Hall is committed to academic excellence and to the nurturing of decent, loving, and responsible human beings" continues as the key commitment of the school's mission.

In the initial phases of its work, the committee acknowledged the ongoing relevance of the categories and goals of Strategic Plan 2000, and adopted its structure as a beginning point. The last plan guided the school during a period free from large building projects, and so was quite philosophical in nature. Its focus on mission and curriculum served perfectly to anchor the school during a time of transition. The current plan continues to steward the school's spiritual and academic mission while looking toward a period of dynamic growth in the school's physical plant (though not its enrollment). The strong sense of urgency in the community regarding the need for campus enhancements focused the entire plan, while the groundwork from Strategic Plan 2000 ensured that building plans would be secondary to conversations about mission and vision.

While invigorated by diversity, the Campbell Hall community has a strong sense of common purpose and considerable shared understandings about the work the school should embrace. The process of strategic planning has affirmed the school's common sense of direction. The school can approach the next phase of growth confident that it has community support to move ahead.
